I really love John Fahey. He plays real old fashioned style songs but there's something in there that makes it just a little bit more than just playing old school acoustic guitar.
Nick Drake's music got my in to learning to finger pick the guitar. The song I've linked is the first one I learnt. It has a tuning of B.E.B.E.B.E ??? Madness.

In addition, a lot of you have been asking for guitar playing tips. Now, That's a broad subject, much broader than I can handle in this small space. Although, I could use a few tips myself. But, the most important tip I can give is, Patience, focus & unwavering determination to be the player you want to be. Practice, practice, practice! Practice rhythm, lead, intonation, finding your sound & songwriting (if you want to be a song writer) as well. And, listen to everything! learn as much as you can. Hang & jam (if you can) with musicians who have more experience than you & learn what you can from them. That's what I tend do & it is one of THE best learning tools, plus its more fun than sitting in your bedroom practicing alone. I think that's a good, but seemingly vague tip, even though its really not as vague as it seems.
This ^^^^ is a quote I just ripped from Slash's myspace blog - I just think he is great, so down to earth - I recommend his bio actually, he did all these amazing things yet still writes about the simple joy of playing music. When I read it and then youtubed and saw the extent of the opulence he had access to, he says nothing about that in his book.

I love that video of Skip James, he was a fine player. I find it really interesting the way people like him and Robert Johnson approached the acoustic guitar.

Thanks for the Robert Johnson heads up. Never heard of him before. I'm so fed up with looking for good old blues like this and getting permanently dissapointed. This is great stuff.
I learnt to play Devil Got My Woman as near as I can get to the way Skip James plays it. It really feels like one big improve. Its amazing to play. The shapes are so alien to anything Ive played before yet you can kind of follow it. I also love how sparse it all is. Blew my mind the first time I heard it.

There's a band called The Beatles you might like too. They're not blues music though. They're more of a rock/pop band.

The shear amount of blues out there is staggering.
Also when no one you know listens to it its quite difficult to find decent stuff. The John Lee Hooker stuff I have heard has not been what I'm looking for. I will try and hunt down some older stuff by him.

Neither am I. None of the people I mentioned, with the exception of John Lee Hooker and Lightnin Hopkins, play electric, and with those two I much prefer their acoustic stuff.
The really great John Lee Hooker album in my opinion is Jack O'Diamonds
(The 1949 Recordings). It's just him and an acoustic guitar being recorded in a white middle class guy's living room in Detroit when he was really young, and he was asked specifically to play the oldest songs he could remember. It's his most "country blues" record.
But the other pretty damn good John Lee Hooker album is The Legendary Modern Recordings 1948-1954. Acoustic guitar, but with some quite trippy effects used - he has double-tracked vocals, slightly strange reverb and a beer bottle top glued to the sole of his shoe on quite a few tracks.
That said, unlike the other people I mentioned, JLH isn't really a great guitarist, so much as a man who knew about space and grooves.

do you know the record label Tompkins Square? They have a really good box-set compilation album called Imaginational Anthem that's a good overview of that strain of off-the-map fingerpicking guitarists. Pretty much a who's who.
