Guitar Amps & Amp Simulators

Valve amps sound better and have a better dynamic range. Tranny amps are ok, but really Valve amps sound much much better.

As regarding power, a lot of smaller amps can be quieter. I have the Marshall TSL-60 head and cos its quite feature packed its actually not very loud. I gig loads and never have any issues with engineers, in fact most of them love my sound and comment on the tone. So I dunno, also in smaller venues you dont have to have the whole band through the PA. Just vocals n Bass drum.

Quiet a few sound engineers are not as clever as they want you to think they are.

Multi FX are convenient and cheap, but personally I hate them, they always compress the tone and squash it
IMHO.

Looks like I'm going to need a proper amp. What sized gigs are the following wattage amps good for:

30w
50w
75w
100w
120w
150w

edit: looking at line 6 amps - need a wide variety of sounds

30w All you will need for mic'ed up normal gigs. 75W for pub backline and vocal pa gigs 100w to be a bastard at pubs or to be tuned down low at real gigs or perfect for real big venue gigs.

150W to be just right all the time.

As a rule an orange rockerverb 100W valve is almost too loud for anything.

I'm tempted by the 75watt one, since I guess, if a gig is going to be too big for that amp, the venue'll likely have a decent enough PA system to mic up the amp. It's 1x12" speaker, whereas the >120w are 2 speaker beasts.

Still need to try out them though.

I like the look of that 75W Line 6 one too, but am a little concerned about whether the character of the guitar will be lost with all the modelling that's going on . .

I've got a line 6 mini amp modelling thingy which I plug into a Marshall. That way if I want my telecaster to sound like a telecaster i just turn the modelling off and hey presto, a lovely unfettered guitar sound

Marshall are replacing the JCM2000 range at the moment so theres some very good prices on them in retailers as they finally clear stocks
