Grindhouse

I saw Death Proof at the cinema a couple of days ago, and loved it. The whole movie is a celebration of Faster, Pussycat! and the second part especially was very satisfying to watch. The music is fantastic, just like in any other Tarantino. I don't want to say too much yet so as not to spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but it didn't seem misogynistic to me -- quite the opposite. It is a clever and perfectly presented proof that many old b-movies, even some so-called exploitative ones, are real cinematic treasures that hide under the surface an aspect both visually attractive and empowering. I'm glad that Tarantino is perceptive enough to understand this, unlike certain film critics that clearly don't have a clue.

Also, I really don't get the fuss about it being released separately from Planet Terror. As a full feature it stands perfectly fine on it's own, I don't feel like I've been deprived of something by not having seen the two as a double bill.

Glad you her you liked it Leica. I'm really looking forward to this. :)

When is this out in the UK?

I have avoided downloading this, patiently waiting for the cinema release

Glad I took the chance to see the double-bill whilst in the US.
The format was a bit new(well...old) and I guess could be described as confusing.
Plus the Theater ( the Chinese one on Hollywood BLVD) was totally deserted?
Out of the Two I probably enjoyed DEATHPROOF more however the double bill did work . the trailers were class.
I feel it deserves the the Double-Bill ....and Single ticket as was intended

oh ye...please please please please let there be a release of 'Machette"
remember being upset that it was just a spoof trailer. now it may be realised

just watched Death Proof. and thought it was good... not the best film ever but was good...

slow to start but wicked at the end.

If it hasn't sold out, it's on at the Ritzy on Sunday with a Q&A with Tarantino himself afterwards...

Did anyone hear about the row between the Dead Kennedys that broke out because of Grindhouse? The Kennedys agreed to have 'Too Drunk to Fuck' accompany the rape scene that's already been discussed. Jello Biafra then hit out at them saying he wrote every note of the song and never intended it to be used to accompany a piece of misogynistic cinema. The Kennedys replied saying that it had been shown in court of law that he did not write every note of the song and that his objections had less to do with his principles than they did with seeking publicity.

The plot thickens!

I enjoyed Death Proof, though I get the feeling it would have worked better within the context of Grindhouse where it was about 30 minutes shorter. It feels like a slight film that has been stretched out and some of scenes go on for too long. They are the typical Tarrantino dialogues of cultural referencing and stuff I've heard before in other films of his. Still, much of the dialogue is witty, the actresses are great and it's mostly fun to watch. I really liked Zoe Bell who is a famous stunt woman and apart from contributing some inpressive stunt work on the hood of a speeding car, plays one of the main characters. This was her first acting job and maybe exactly because she isn't a trained actress, she gives the most natural performance in the film.

Someone would have to explain to me what about the film is misogynistic. Tarantino makes all the female characters smart, very likable and the villain a bit of a looser. You end up caring for the women and don't want anything to happen to them, so I don't see what the problem is.

Yes, me too.

I thought that was one of its charms. I don't know which scenes you are referring to, but in general it seemed a deliberate thing to me.

I just wish there were more shots of what looked like a great apartment right at the beginning.

Thanks for enlightening us.

The dialogue is dire and poorly written in contrast to other films he has done. The pace of the film was awful it consists almost entirely of shots of the girl's feet, bum, legs and them talking about nothing of any interest. Plot holes riddle the film, there is no action, you do not care about any of the people in the film. There are too many nods to himself through out the film, posters on walls, and references to himself. A boring exploitation film that is neither witty or amusing and the only saving grace is the soundtrack. Of course it is supposed to be exactly how I described it, it is after all a homage to the b-movie and it would have worked if it was not for the the appalling dialogue – mostly about the sexual predilections of the women and the various men they’ve slept with – is so badly garbled that it fails to make a relevant impact.

Planet Terror opened here this week and I've just got back from seeing it.

It's fun -- a nasty zombie thriller with plenty of good little details. I have to concede that it would look great in a long double bill alongside Death Proof, perhaps with a break in the middle for more sweets :)

wow Death Proof is my favourite Quentin Tarantino film now, i thought it was going to be shit. i think it might help to be hungover to enjoy it though. i'm pretty sure it is a bit mysogynistic though! you just have to see that as being authentically trashy though.

I thought Death Proof was excellent.
I was then blown away by Planet Terror too.
I like Rob Zombies films to but everyone pans the shit out of them

Just watched Death Proof - missed it when it came out - loved it - bizarrely his most uplifting and moving film for me! The odd dialogue scene was a bit long, but beyond that top top Tarantino. Totally in his element, explicitly being able to be the film referencer that he is.
The DVD for Planet Terror is missing annoyingly...

Name checked in the movie are a few 70s car films, including this, which looks amazing! Going to give this a spin now....

amazing movie
written starring and directed by a stunt car driver - died doing a stunt aged 49
that youtube version is
"The 2001 video release features an all new musical score (and all new sound effects), largely due to music agreement issues for the original soundtrack. In the original video release, the sound effects made by the cars (engines, tires, crashes, etc.) is authentic."
The workshop scenes at Chase Research were filmed at director H.B. Halicki's real-life workshop, and occasionally filming would stop for several days so he could repair cars to earn money and continue production.
