grime

Ras Kwame was talikng about grime on his show the other day on Radio 1. It should be on the listen again section of their website. Also on the show was Jon E. Cash, who doesn't like to be called grime, but is well worth a listen. He says he makes "sublow" music.

jon e. cash is superb - all the other stuff i've heard off black ops is pretty narsty too.

it's all sweet stuff - think i'll be disturbing the neighbours tonight...

Anything on the Hot Flush label, esp. the Toasty material, is fucking incredible; Search & Destroy and Morph seem to be doing good things as well. The first Grime album is a bit pants IMO - dry, sterile stuff; I've only got the vinyl version tho so dunno if there's any better on the CD.

What I've heard I really like, and I've downloaded the 2 mixes above (ta JE:5).

Not a huge fan of breakcore but like grime...for me it is the drum programming that kicks it.

it's dj-ing music though - the full tracks alone sound pretty clinical and repetitive: cut up by a skillful dj, it's a different matter altogether...

i went to the grime launch party, where you really did see the difference - plasticman cut & scratched it to fuck, and was amazing. mark one was pretty uninspiring djing, but had the virus syndicate yelling nasty shit over the top, which made up for it...

I'm about to download some of these links now to listen to while I'm writing. I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks for the continuing tips! :D

it's a pretty diverse scene as any listen to the london pirates will tell yer, it's a true hybrid, incorporating all sorts, i've got a skream 12" and it's just awesome, stripped down dark bass moody, what is it, 'dupstep' and then there's DJ Distance and Toasty's 'Break step' which is also good but more related to breaks and stuff.....

The current crisis as i see it is when talent gets signed up they release the record and drop the grime and do hiphop tracks, it doesn't do the scene any favours. When Dizzie came along we thought the battle had been one, a truly brit rap culture.

As I understood it Wiley was the founder of Roll Deep and still the mainstay. Dizzee used to be in them before he hit big. His first album is very good as is his track with Basement Jaxx but his second album was very disappointing as if he was trying to water down the grime sound to sell to Q readers. Ditto with the Roll Deep album. For them try getting hold of one of the Lord Of The Decks comps which they did one of. Nasty Crew did another which is good.

Wiley's album is good, especially because I picked it up for £1 in a charity shop. However I will also mention Kano's "Home Sweet Home" which at the moment is my favourite album of the year. Great stuff. Try "Typical Me" and "Ps & Qs".

As far as I know crew line ups change quite a lot so don't be surprised if you're all right in some way.

There's a lot of good young talent coming through but it's so diverse that it can't really be labelled as grime anymore. Forinstance Plan B used to be a big grime star, see the peerless Cap Back on Run the Roads Vol.1, but all his stuff now is done with acoustic guitar so people don't think they can label it grime anymore. The point is not whether it's grime or not, just whether it's any good.

If you want to hear a lot of good new tunes then check out the RWD tv website. It's got a lot of videos of new grime stuff on it. Some of it's pretty slick like Roll Deep's major label funded 'When I'm 'Ere' or Kano's 'NiteNite' but the majority of it is laughably amateurish. Check out Mr. Wong's stuff, he's got a good sense of humour and Regal Player's 'Rude Boy remix' is pretty funny for all the young kids shouting rude boy throughout the track. But just explore there's plenty there.

Has anyone else heard about Lady Sov. signing for Jay-Z?

Has anyone got links to decent mixes that could be said to be representative of the different styles? Eg. one that's predominantly breakstep, one that's dubstep etc?

From an oldie who while not desparate to be 'down' with da yoots does rather like the style...

I don't think it works like that. Mixes I've heard tend to be a mix (der) of all elements. Get on soulseek and do a search.

"Lord Of the Decks" are the comps to get I reckon.

Kano grows more and more on me. He looked great at the MOBOs too, with Chuck D saying it was the best thing he'd seen in 10 years or something. "NiteNite" isn't the most representative song of his as I get the feeling he might have been told to colaborate on a track with Mike Skinner in order to market the album bigger. Skinner definitely ain't grimey.

I like some grime, although in small doses and preferably (although not always) without emceeing/vocals. Stuff like Werk's Grim Dubs releases is more up my street, something with a bit of a twist.

I've found myself wading through a lot of bog-standard grime-by-numbers tracks to find the real gems, but when it's good, grime can really hit the spot – I love the basslines, and the beats are really interesting to beatmatch.

No...I do know her first single release in the US is going to be remixed by one of the Beastie boys, but getting signed by Hova would be a massive break for her in the states. I heart Lady Sov, me.

As for Kano, Home Sweet Home is a wicked bad album, but Nite Nite does make me slightly nauseous, and has obviously been encouraged to do a "Dry Your Eyes" type chart friendly number...

"Jentina... this is is not a dream... THIS IS A FACKIN' NIGHTMARE, YOU BITCH!"

A classy diss, that :D

Word - I feel exactly the same way

Run to the Roads 2 is supposed to be even better.

some good downloads here www.grimetime.de

went to lots of grime nights in berlin.. I saw kano, bruza, triple threat, no lay and a couple of others.. when it comes to performing live bruza was the best of the bunch and i reckon he could be 'the next big thing' but was always a great night out.. part of this is probably the really positive audience reaction..

talked to a few of the mc's and the event organiser and it's clear the acts love going to berlin because the atmosphere is so much less agressive than london and cos it's a chance for them to pretend to be jet set international superstars :)

I didn't realise grime had ventured across the seas properly. Fair play if it isn't just David Hasselhoff the Germans like. ;)

I'm not sure if he's started up his own label now he's "retired" but Jay-Z was on Roc-A-Fella who used, almost exclusively, Kanye West and Just Blaze as producers. However being as he's the self-styled biggest thing in the entire world I wouldn't have though Kanye would be that interested in Lady Sov, although he suprise us. I actually prefer Blaze who seems to have more tricks up his sleeve so if she's with him that'd be awesome. I don't think she'd fit the Neptunes' more pop hook-orientated sound but if she was with Missy or Timbaland that could be explosive. Timbo with someone like Kano or perhaps Dizzee would be huge.
