Gregg's the bakers

I have a real soft spot for percy ingle.
Percy Ingle's differ slightly from Greggs in that you can sit down and eat in them, iirc. Other than that I find them both quite similar - offering cheap, reasonably filling and tasty food when needed.

I don't think I have ever had anything from Greggs.....that sausage bean thing sounds dead on though:)

they also do macaroni cheese pies (well, in Scotland anyway). I remember them from my yoof as being absolutely rank (although to be fair they might not have been from Greggs). Had one last time I was in Edinburgh and it was cheesey, carby, stodgy wonderfulness!

not the ones i know, they're pretty much identical to Greggs, except that I don't go in them.

I've definately seen a few Percy Ingle branches that have seating areas in them. For all I know maybe one or two Greggs also have them as well, but I've yet to see any.

Made up words are shit.

Totally. They are so moneffolous. They really hongle off my didwhack

But as far as sausage and bean melts go, they are a disappointment. The sausage is actually tiny balls of what can only be described as 'stuff' and the beans are actually mushy beans. Its like baby food.

I just had one of their excellent Chicken Oval Bites though - mustard mayo etc. The shit indeed.

Steak bakes are also the business. Full of fail (heart fail that is) but worth it

I used to think that too - I really did. Held them in the same contempt as.... well, really foul fake foodstuff.....

but I swear, the last one I had was absolutely lush - and it was from the Greggs in Morningside, Edinburgh

Might give them another try after had some deep fried pizza from chippy in Dumfries:cool:

Their sandwiches are really nice
I would rather a sandwich from Greggs than some poncey dried up panini with the same amount of fat in but an extra two quid cos its got a bit of withered basil in from one of those coffee shop chains.

Char Sui buns are indeed the food of champions.

junk food from the alternative mainstream doesn't seem so bad now...then again, we are comparing it to gregs!

Or maybe just full of heart. My mate found an atrium in his :(

Ah so thats what they mean by 'hearty' :(

Its true though, I sometimes find organ tubes in them which are great to squeeze and watch all of the minced up brains come out of, the kids love it too :)

Cant eat their pasties- so lardy and salty. Made the mistake of opening one up. Grimness. And there are two stores in central Lewisham.

What happened to The Bakers Oven? Delicate breads and pastries and they had a "we only employ cute staff" policy too.

yes their sandwiches are very fresh tasting and simple (in a good way), and cheap too. but they are not the point of gregg's, for me.

For me it was staggering to work with a hangover, nipping in for a Ribena and Cheese and onion pasty and afterwards feeling alive but slightly more disgusted at myself and another few years of mortality cast asunder

quite right.

All the Greggs round here now have a sign up saying

'Due to our manufacturing process we cannot gaurentee that any of our products are free from fish, shell fish, nuts etc'

Mmmm. Fishy doughnuts anyone?
No thanks

I love Gregg's pasties and sausage rolls, but I can't stand their sandwiches.

Percy Ingle's sausage rolls are foul, too puffy and greasy.
But they do the best jam doughnuts.
