Greenwich chat, photos and discussion

Last two posts sound about right. I don't know it, but nor do I know anyone with a good word for it. :D

My main impression of it was formed after waking up in the bus depot there at 1am, having fallen asleep on the 53 somewhere in the vicinity of Elephant. I walked back to Woolwich road to pick up a bus back again. I'd also lost my lighter, and every person I asked for a light looked terrified, as if they expected me to follow up the question by pulling a knife and demanding their wallet.

Heh, I used to do that all the time and the garage was always full of bewildered drunks wanting to know where they were and how they could get to the Elephant or the Old Kent Road.

I'm sure they're used to it. The security bloke at Belvedere bus garage is a saint. The time I fell asleep on a 180 and ended up there in the early hours, he even got me a cup of coffee whilst I waited for a taxi to take me back again! Maybe he thought I needed sobering up a bit. :hmm: :D

That's well nice of him!

The N171 used to terminate at Hither Green meaning I could sleep all the way home. Once it started terminating at Catford Bus Station, it meant long long drunken walks home.:(

Plumstead isnt as souless as Thamesmead or as intimidating as Kidbrook.
Its just slightly run down.

What's Plumstead like? I went there for the Tour de France last year, and it looked well worth a proper investigation. Very curious area. In a good way.

Erith is a bit of a dump too tho on a recent visit found people there to be quite friendly. To the east of it are some curious features, such as a moated farmhouse which was originally built for William the Conqueror's half-brother.

Greenhithe is okay, in fact a bit of a surprise along that stretch of the estuary: two nice riverside pubs and some attractive old housing, some of it with a Flemish look.

the best pub in greenwich is the union on royal hill. they do great food, and serve meantime beer. soft drinks are a quid!

I don't like the Union much. It's okay, but too modern and trendy inside and feels more like a wine bar than a proper pub, although it does do a decent pint and the food's said to be nice. The Richard I, pretty much next door to it, is far nicer - a proper, old-fashioned pub with some of the best beer in Greenwich.

The nicest pub of the lot IMHO is the Cutty Sark, although since it's one the river it does get very busy.

Well, having been given notice exactly one week ago, today we have found somehere new to live. Not in Greenwich though, although we will be connected by the foot tunnel. Yes, we are moving to E14 (I Love Dogs).

The location isn't quite so nice, but we will be by the river and have the added bonus of a pool and gym on site. Handy for the commute too.

So, any E14ers in the house?

1 Cutty sark was more ace when it was less discovered
2 E14 is appaling in the way it rubs multi-million pound developments in the face of some of Londons poorest who are slowly being crowded into ghettos of under finaced "social housing" - social my fucking arse, having visited some utter greed obsessed client (The Brothers, sad day when they raised more cash to keep em from being being eaten by their Hedge Fund mates) took a wander and see what had changed, utterly depressing, grim streets of badly maintainted Municpal Flat Block E type shit, boraded up shops, with the hideous bulk of The Tower louring over the lot
3 The braying Hoorays of the Isle of Dogs will drive you to murder

well unless youre gonna tell me youre both cleaners then weve got enough posh fuckers trying to clutter up the place round here thanks

There sometiomes a terrible acrid stench that hangs pall like over Greenwich when the conditions are right - coems from the sugar factory at Blackwall I think

horrible when its strong

I was thinking it came from Blackwall the moment I saw your post. I used to drive past that Hays processing plant (whatever it is) on the approach to the tunnel (from the south) and I thought the smell came from there. Its a dire chemically 'brown' smell.

So we're either cleaners or we're posh? What if we're posh cleaners, like those ones on telly?

Tell you what, define posh for me and I promise I'll let you know if either of us fit your definition.

Now pass me the Pimms, there's a good fellow.

Don't you know it's awfully vulgar to talk about how much one earns, old bean. Let's just say that once the childrens' school fees have been taken care of and the staff paid, there's only about enough left over for five or six decent holidays a year. It's the credit crunch and all that, you see. In fact we might have to let the yacht go. Damned shame.

I quite like it round there:D There's an Ambala (Indian Sweet Shop) that does the best samosas I've ever tasted. I normally get the train from Deptford buy a load of snacky things from Ambala then walk up the hill to Plumstead common with my dog. From there you can follow the Green Chain Route for a good few miles through Oxleas Woods or sometimes in the other direction thru Abbey Wood ending up by the river in Erith, then train from there back home:cool:

thought so

in the city, looking to rent in greenwich or canary wharf

youve got posh written all over you mate

Don't be silly, quite a few posters on urban75 probably work in the City. Doesn't mean they're old-school-tie Barings Bank types working 'gentleman's hours', more likely IT staff, recruitment agents, DTP and repro operators, maintenance engineers etc.

Shhhh...you'll give the game away!
