Greens to stand against David Davis

bumpage before it drops off the front page

1. Shan Oakes finally mentioned by BBC news, although about the same as the Militant Elvis Party and less than David Icke:hmm:

2. to Anatole or anyone else at the coalface up there, how is the campaign going, whats the situation on the ground there and if you could possibly remove the rose tinted specs for a few minutes, how do you rate her chances?

I expect Davis will be re-elected, with the Greens removing a respectable chunk of his majority, and setting up for the future, even if she doesn't get in, that's still x thousand people voting for the greens for the first time and excelent publicity, which leads me onto...

3. In the event that Shan achieves this massive upset and unseats Davis, the comment re. gaining other seats a page or two back. now apart from Brighton Pavillion (where I live), I don't know the situation in other constituencies. I can see norwich south going green on a good day, but the others?

The Greens have been chipping away at Lancaster but boundary changes will make it harder next time. I have heard little from H&H, which says a lot about our mainstream media given the unique nature of the darn thing!

wow, i never knew that Lancaster had that many green councillers! as many as norwich and brighton & hove and i had no idea, again, mainstream media, they only mentioned norwich, B&H and the bouroughs in london in the "Greens double seats" article back during those elections, despite being from london and living almost as far south as possible it really does piss me off at how southern-centric the news media are

mm, Lancaster has been a Green outcrop for ages, but translating local results to anything else will be a massive hurdle. They are starting to out-reach into places like Preston, which has annoyed both my party (LibDems) and the local Respect/Left List lot to varying degrees because of alleged/claimed/assumed "spolier candidate" tactics. Still, they're more active round these parts than the BNP and such so that's summut.

The Mainstream media are probably ignoring H&H because they can't find a silly celeb angle to it, or they can't dilute the argument into snappy soundbites, such is the way of things. The Greens are probably the favourites to come second in H&H, which should be notable enough...well it IS...for wider media coverage.

Hope of the "populist" wing of the Labour Party, and darling of some of the "real socialist" elements on here, Jon Cruddas has come out today in the Sunday Mirror as supporting Jill Saward, who is campaigning against Davis on an anti-civil liberties "if you've got nothing to hide you've got nothing to fear" type platform. Cruddas even admits to making a campaign donation. So much for Cruddas being the "hope of the left" in the Labour Party - he is supporting a candidate who not only supports the government line on 42 days but is significantly more authoritarian than them on a whole range of issues!
It seems the best advice for most of the moribund Labour Party these days would be to STFU.;)

I think if you get anywhere near the New Labour front bench you gotta be a grade A cunt - sorta wondered how long it would be before his real self came out...
