Green Man Festival

We're heading down soonish, had a late one last night getting some beer practice in. Bright blue sky here in Hebden right now :)

I've not yet heard from my mates who went, but looking on flickr, the site looks like it was a tad muddy...

Anybody here returned safely yet? Did you have fun?

:)

Got back earlier this evening. The site was very muddy when we left but we managed to drive our campervan off without a tow, I wish someone had told me not to stand behind the wheels when pushing though :o the mud on my pants was 3 inches thick  :D
The festival was excellent, my first time but I'm sure we'll go back.
Highlights were, Spiritualized, Fuck Buttons, Mumford and sons,The National and Caribou.
Although it got very wet and muddy on Sunday night, the site was still easy enough to get around and everyone seemed to be having as good a time as me.
Loved it.

eta. Forgot about Richard Thompson, he was good too.

Sorry, couldn't help chuckling at the thought of that. I've probably done it myself too at some point over the years; it's textbook slapstick comedy! :D

Spoke to my mate earlier, now returned, and he said the effort of the mud did start to get him down a bit at times. I don't think it really spoil it for him too much though; he mentioned that he and his youngest kid ended up taking part in some kind of impromptu parade at some point, traipsing 'round the site. :D

Of the bands, he spoke highly of Black Mountain, Spiritualized, Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, Super Furries, Richard Thompson, Iron & Wine, King Creosote, James Yorkston, Jennifer Gentle, O'Death, and no doubt 'many many more'.

Wouldn't mind going myself one year...

Neither would I, some great bands there ...

In bold : saw them at the Big Chill, they were  :)

Green Man Festival is a money spinning pile of shite.

You are so wrong mate  It's the one festival this year that didn't have security checking your bags on the way in for boose. Beer was cheaper than some other festies and the food was reasonable. Good bands that you'd have have to pay a lot to see.
I can't understand why you would think what you do.

What a great festival. Really enjoyed it despite the mud, think we might upgrade to a campervan next year though.

Lovely atmosphere all round and a fantastic setting. Thought prices were pretty reasonable bit cheaper than Womad anyway.

The Accidental, School of Language, Devon Sproule, Laura Marling all excellent can't remember all the others but some great stuff to be heard on all stages. Had a great 2 hour dance while Eddy Temple Morris was in the dance tent on Friday night awesome!

Like every festival there are bits to be improved upon but I can't see where people are coming from saying it shite?

well, he said belatedly, what a damned great time I had.

Weather not too much of a pisser, it was still so nice and easy to get round thew whole site even when totally muddy.

Lots of great bands, only a couple of duffers, I've downloaded loads of stuff since returning, and they al lstill sound good! (tho the vocals on the Howlin Rain leave a little to be desired).

Was very pleased to discover Sennen, who were the first band I saw properly (like a psyched out Comsat Angels). Heard someone else from the campsite who also sounded ace just before them, but aint sure who that was. War On Drugs were disappointing, but then things livened up again, first Alela Diane, good proper folky stuff And then the mighty Fuck Buttons. there album was okay i thought, but it really came across brilliantly live. Ditto Black Mountain, f'ing kick arse stuff. Was a shame I didnt bother goping back for the end of Spiritualized, they sounded to be top hole too, but we wanted to check out the camp fire, so didn't. Hey ho, cant have everything.

What did we do on saturday? Hard to recall now. When was Laura Marling? She surprised me by being so good. Couple of decent bands n at the Cafe, tho there names are lost in the mud of my mind. Highlights were, unsurprisingly, Drive-By Truckers and SFA. Both very good indeed, although not loud enough by a long chalk. When the lass sang with DBT, I could barely hear her, and I was right at the front! Not one of the greatest SFA gigs ever either, but they are always gobsmackingly good live anyway, so it was still super dooper. Me Welsh mate Jeff has slagged them off for the last five years (at least), but suddenly went 'oooh, fuck is that who they are. They're really good aren't they?' Daft welsh twat!

The Peth were that night too, weren't they? They were alright, wouldn't bother paying to see them, but they passed the time, even if it did sound like they were playing a bunch of cast off SFA songs.

Iron & Wine seemed okay on sunday, but played too much at the same slow tempo early on, so we buggerred off to the bar, just as they sounded like they were playing summat a bit more kick ass. Hey ho. Comrade Thompson was, of course, absolutely magnificent, finally turned me sister onto him, after a dozen years of saying how great he was. And then we went to see Pentangle, or five of us did anyway. The very best and worst of British folk music. They started so well, Thompson, Jansch & Renbourn playing brilliantly. And then Jacqui McShee started singing. Oh. Dear. I recall now why I never bought any. We managed three songs, then JM started to introduce the fourth as being 'castles and dragons and stuff'. We all just looked at each other, and then Kitty (aged 11) spokoe up - 'can we go and see Caribou?' 'Yes' we all replied and ran away. And how good was it that we did? A lot! Fucking excellent way to finish the festie, another band that I think are good but not amazing on album, but utterly superb live.

Jolly nice to meet Shirl & Wolfie briefly - next time I'll try and dump the welsh twat before drinking with anyone! Soz not to see KBT, but there is always next year, when we'll deffo be going again.

oh yes - only bit of a bummer, or two bits:

Why was it so bloody quiet? Really, really quiet. I had me 'If its too loud, you're too old' t-shirt on, but the only people complaining weere aged 7 or under!

And - why, oh why oh why did everyone get such short bloody sets? 45 mins for the truckers and Dicky Thompson, tis a bloody joke! SFA for only an hour as well, they were just getting warmed up.
