Greek Island recommendations

I got mistaken for a member of the BNP in Dalston a couple years back, when some bloke starting rabbiting onto me about the 'sins of the Empire', and payback time. Apart from that I'm being met with general indifference.

Santorini is abit of a shite hole now.. I mean the volcano and caldera is amazing, but the rest of the island.. jesus.

Not sure how useful it is on a holiday recommendation thread to call what is generally thought to be one of the most beautiful spots on earth a shit hole and then not come up with an alternative or go into a bit of detail why you think it is that terrible. Apart from that like any other of the famous destination in Greece it can get a bit touristy, I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Santorini,nice enough,very touristy.Naxos,relaxed,wonderful.Smaller islands near Naxos,even better.

Cheers. Santorini just looks ridiculously stunning on pics. Never been to Greece and planning to do the island thing next year. Was thinking of going there in May before the tourist season kicks off and only for two or three nights.

Yes there are some great places the sunset for instance in Oia is ridiculous but very overcrowded.Quad bikes are as cheap as chips to hire on Santorini and there are quite a lot of places you can go that are mainly inhabited by Greeks, they are off the beaten track but well worth a visit if long sandy beaches and Greek food are your thing.

Go there!! You'll love it! :)

For end of Sept/early Oct I'd say head south. I've been to Thassos at that time of year and you have to expect some rain and/or thunderstorms because it's one of the greenest Greek islands for a reason. It's exceptionally verdant beautiful, though with spring-water running down the street in some of the villages and the trek up to the top of Mount Ypsaron is well-worth the effort. You can see Mount Athos from there and the view is absolutely breathtaking. The schlep from Kavala airport via the ferry at mosquito-central Keramoti is slightly less thrilling.

I can highly recommend a trip to the south-west of Crete: bus from Chania over the mountains to Chora Sfakion. Maybe a side-trip on the local bus to Frangokastello to loaf about on a beach for a day or two, and then the ferry service from CS to Paleohora via Loutro, Agia Roumeli and Sougia. All of these places would be worth stopping in for a day or two. At that time of year you have to expect the restaurants and tavernas to be winding down for the winter but there's still no shortage of good places to eat and drink, and the sea will be at its warmest. And no school-kids. Perfect!

If I was going to the Greek Islands in May I'd fly to Mykonos and spend a few days there, nipping over to Delos for the day to see the remains of the settlement and the marble terrace of the Lions. Then ferry to Naxos for a day or two and on to the Little Cyclades for another three days and onto Amorgos. If you were out there for three weeks or more you could go back to Ios and then onto Santorini. The Greek Islands are ace.

Woman I work with has just come back from Santorini and said it was beautiful. She did a bit of island-hopping for three weeks and she said it was her favourite of the three island she went to.

Where would you go if you mostly wanted quiet beach, food and had a baby in tow? :hmm:

Not many quiet beaches that I know off in July and August. Outside of that the Little Cyclades are off the beaten path. Easiest way to get there is flight to Mykanos, ferry to Naxos and then another ferry onto one of the Little Cyclades.
