Excuse ignorance, but just what exactly came out of New Orleans? I know a lot of jazz and blues came from the South, but not New Orleans specifically AFAIK (but I know very little about that place musically, apart from what I've seen in Live And Let Die)

the meters!

doctor john

Lee dorsey

new orleans is a major player historically

it spawned music with "feel"

although it didn't spawn many musicians you'd of heard of it basically changed the face of modern music

Ok, get 100 people of the street and give them the list above - ask them to name as many bands, genres, artists as possible from those cities and I bet you New Orleans will come somewhere near the bottom.

no but EVERYONE of the bands, genres, artists they would mention would be influenced what went down in new orleans!

Who gives a fuck?

eta: I usually find your arrogance (which you admit) on musical matters quite amusing. But you're being a tit. I think New Orleans, you think New York. I think you're wrong. Vice versa.
So what?

IMO, punk didn't start in New York and I don't give a fuck about disco.

LOL. That's a bit like dismissing New York because you didn't like the soundtrack to Arthur. :D

For me, it has to be Detroit (even though my tastes lie closer to Glasgow). Motown, garage rock, house. That's a pretty fine pedigree.

Heheh I'm having fun - but now I'm stepping on your toes.

You should give a fuck about disco.

But the music it influenced is 'better' than the originals, so who cares? (this is an OPINION)

well as cities go new orleans has been the most important of that list,
although the list is shit as it misses off seattle and LA, and has wigan on it (ok was that meant to be the joke option)

but if you just wanna go on artists to come from a city then yeah it' wouldn't be top!

but dont underestimate the importance of new orleans in musical history, it's immense!

The list isn't shit. The list represents the nominations made on the other thread.

Wigan should have been disqualified cos nothing actually came from there.
Seattle only spawned a subgenre AFAIK
LA - what came from there? Gangsta rap and hair metal?
