Greatest football player ever

This is a very ambiguous question in that not only do we have to compare different eras (Stanley Matthews or Ronaldinho?), different positions (Pele vs Moore 1970 must've been something) but also we don't know whether we're actually looking at natural talent or all-round gamesmanship and their whole career or at any one point. For example Pele won 3 World Cups over a 12 year period but he never dominated the whole tournament as Maradona did in 1986, or even Cruyff and Beckenbauer in 1974. People like me are also in the bind that the earliest football I can remember is the 1990 world Cup, so how can I judge Puskas or Di Stefano when I've never seen a whole game of them?

In short, I'm going to have to abstain.

Seconded - has to be Cantona for me - oozed class and just had that extra bit of special magic - shame he wasnt seen on the world stage where he blonged though to light up a World cup.

Sod it, I'm just going to post an all time XI;

Banks
Carlos Alberto, Beckenbauer, Moore, Maldini
Matthews, Mathaus, Cruyff, Best
Maradona, Pele
