Greatest Animated Films?

i did quite like ghost in the shell though... though the story feels strangly paced

GITS 2 innocence is wonderfully beutifull... but the story line is a tad hard to follow... especially if you have not read the manga

There's a lot of weighty arty technoid themes in it. It helps to know loads about
techno fetishism and other strange branches of art history.

Belleville Rendez-Vous is utter bollocks, Perfect Blue is very very average if not below avarage for a Japanese animated feature. How does the fat lady dance away on the lights? Too much artistic licence in the plot .

You not like it then clearly. I think its prettier than any of the GITS films.

I don't tend to have a problem with artistic license. I just think its the most original Japanese animation I have ever seen.

i was more comenting about the compleate diffrence in styles between the author of the manga and the director of the film

the feel and atmosphere is almost all the directors work but the story and the charactor design is almost all the manga artists work

though talking about techno fetishism he does do some weird porn

Me too, I think the GITS films are rubbish.

I'm guessing you haven't seen many then.

Its mainly because I watched Appleseed once and thought it was so shit I haven't really bothered to watch anymore. Poor excuse I know

A lot of the stuff we got in this country off the back of Akira in the late 80s was super shit. Not a lot more came over for a long time mostly due to the super high cost of Japanese licences.

There is a big market for kids stuff but the really cool animations never seem to quite make it to the small uk market.

There are tonnes of weird experimental cartoons with quite bizare plots that don't follow regular western cinema 'rules' and kind of take you off guard.

hah

amusing as appleseed was by the same guy who wrote gits

though that cg movie was especially shit ... the really dulled down the female lead

You couldn't give a couple of examples could you?

That is why I got it and watched it. I thought the animation was really really shit.

Mindgame and Tamala 2010 are two full length features that I love. Both a bit odd in their own way. I also really love FLCL but that's a six parter and doesn't really look all that weird these days.

I've got a really soft spot for Urusei Yatsura. Film 2 is pretty good quality and done by that ghost in the shell chappy.

See. What I find key to Japanese animation is how good the animation is. Even if the story is blinding I won't really be able to enjoy it if it looks rubbish. I think this is what happened with Appleseed

this is the cgi appleseed movie i take it not the old ova?

the ova

i dunno... it's still fairly wierd...

actully what it is is pure gainax style...

i guess you have got used to it

Yeah that is the one I have seen. Please don't tell me that is considered good cgi?

ahh no

thats the old 90's OVA the animation is fairly standard (for early to mid 90's)

they recently remade it in all cg

Ah OK - that might explain it. Perhaps I shall watch this new one then.

Although just a thought - is that weird mechanised rabbit thing the inspiration for the rabbit in Donnie Darko?
