Greatest Animated Films?

what about Tim Burtons macabre classics?

The Corpse Bride

The nightmare before christmas.

Miyazaki is incredible - even Kiki's DElivery Service was uplifting

Even? That's my favorate. It's very hard to explain why the animated tale of a 13 year old witch who sets up a delivery service could be one of a 34 year old mans favorate films.

I *heart* Kiki :)

And so you should. The song at the end and the begining make me cry.

Even if I listen to them without the film. Memories.

I get a welling up inside me even when I think of Totoro and the destination on the cat bus changing to 'Mai'.

*Blub*

I remember seeing a quirkly little movie called Time Masters (think it was from the French bods who did alot of Manga-esque stuff in the 80's) that was surprisingly good. Aimed at kids, but it was quite dark - IIRC it was a futuristic corollary to a rites-of-passage thing.

Must see if I can track it down...

Quite surprised no-one has mentioned Akira, or is that too mainstream these days? I still think it's a fantastic work of art.

Akira is  as fuck. So is Ghost in the Shell. I know they are the two anime films that get most of the attention (though Spirited Away is pretty well known now), but that doesn't stop them both being amazing. :)

One animated film that I'm really looking forward to is Persepolis.

I love the graphic novel and the film looks pretty faithful (the author has adapted it herself). All it needs now is a release date...

Ice Age. Not 2 though, that was shit.

That whatever-it-was and his constant quest to keep hold of his acorn is one of the funniest things is cinema history.

I was crying with laughter. :D

I vote for anything by Miyazaki purely for the animation although storywise and musically, Ghost in the Shell is hard to beat.

Finding Nemo is by far the best of the computer generated ones IMO, the water looks real and it's funny.

I usually love this sort of film of a Sunday afternoon, but I hated Nemo.

Now Spongesbob........

I saw this yesterday and it's FUCKING good :) I haven't read the gn so I couldn't tell you how close it is. It's been on general release in france for a few months now, I'm surprised it hasn't made it to the anglophone world yet.

But yeah, see this, it's amazing.

Yellow Submarine was groundbreaking.
When it was being done you could hardly get any ad animation shot in London.
My main tutor did loads of the background work.
Bob Godferey had to use non union labour to rostrum shoot overnight in secret.
Even employed students :D

Sorry, I digress.

Hate Disney:mad:

Jan Svankmajer's Alice.

I remember first catching it ages ago when it was being shown in weekly parts on Channel 4 late night iirc and it scared me half to death (I was but a wee lad at the time!). I then watched it again a couple of years ago in full and remembered just how wonderful and scary it was.

It brillantly captures a nightmarish world of Alice in Wonderland through surreal stop-motion animation and some disturbingly terrifying character creations.

there is no particular one film or anything that i'd call a favourite

though i will say my favourite studio is gainax

i appreciate a lot of the ghibli / miyazaki stuff but if i tried to rank them i don't think they would be that close to the top... same with akira... akira has some fantastic use of light and cloud and a top notch ost (though it clashes badly in some bits of the film) but i dislike the character design and the story was shot to shit if you know the manga

Akira and Ghost in the Shell suck balls. I'm quite a big anime/cartoon fan but I find both of these dull as ditchwater.

That Persepolis looks amazing though. Is that a screen shot or from the comic?

Belleville Rendez-Vous - really really good. French obviously but there is pretty much no talking in it. It's really good.

And whilst Akira and Ghost in the Shell are great Perfect Blue is best Japanese animated film I have seen.

Belleville Rendez-Vous is utter bollocks, Perfect Blue is very very average if not below avarage for a Japanese animated feature. How does the fat lady dance away on the lights? Too much artistic licence in the plot .

kon is a very wierd director

i found perfect blue to be overrated aswell....

but then i tend to like anime for it's charactor development and to be honest i didn't feel much from the charactors...

i did quite like ghost in the shell though... though the story feels strangly paced

GITS 2 innocence is wonderfully beutifull... but the story line is a tad hard to follow... especially if you have not read the manga
