Great TV shows that turned to shit (contains details of how TV shows END)

I don't quite get why they did the Millennium versions of Blackadder.

They were vaguely entertaining but pretty pointless. And if ever a show had a good place to stop it was Blackadder. And, come to think of it, the end of series six of Red Dwarf when they all got blown up. That would have been a pretty good full stop.

"Jumping the shark" is indeed the watchword here. Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Lost,... I remain a bit of a Heroes geek and concede it went batshit for a bit but it's back now.

It is also scientific fact that childrens TV went shit around the time that 1980s kids finished their GCSEs :D

Only Fools And Horses post-series five (after which episodes were extended past the classic half hour length) was for the most part a bit rubbish, with occasional moments of lolness.

BSG fucked it. Could have been the greatest ever sci fi TV show. They could have saved it but instead decided not to bother writing it in advance and just made more and more bollocks up as they went along until it fell apart in a spectacular mess at the end. Boooooo.

.

Utter, utter rubbish. The ending of BSG was brilliant. A little on the nose maybe with them walking around modern day New York discussing God, but other than that, brilliant. Every second of happiness for those characters was earned.

Damn straight it did. About 2001 I think it was. Right when I finished my GCSE's.

I got six A*s and four As. I still can't get a fucking job. Them fucking teachers lied to me.

The Simpsons

Quite good example. While I can't point where it jumped the shark (well, there's that grunge Homer episode, but the episode would be acceptable if it didn't pissed and took a dump on the show's continuity), the quality clearly went down the crapper in the past 8-10 years. It's shocking how the old, mid 90s episodes I've seen dozens of times are still fresher than the newer ones.

I've quit on Lost and Prison Break after the first seasons of each. Awful storytelling and couldn't be arsed anymore. Besides, Lost was amazingly so "well" written missing an episode would mean losing track of the plot.

oi I haven't got to the end yet!

Agreed about Prison Break and Heroes, though I'll still get round to watching more of the latter when I get the chance.

The supreme example of a great TV show turning shit is the X-Files. There's some debate about when it happened, but it's pretty much always before season 7.

I never listen to Atomic's views on anything film or TV related. In fact, if he slates something, I often jot it down on my list of things to watch.

The Simpsons

Some new episodes are just embarrassing to watch but about one in four are still good.

They did one the other day when Maggie actually did say her first words. Has she ever done that before? (not in a treehouse of horror) They tried to stop her saying anything before to comedic effect.

Anyways.

I think Only Fools, which was quite funny, sort of lost it when they got wives and girlfriends. Plus the woman who played Raquel (?) was a lousy actress, or at least I found her really irritating.

The most recent Only Fools and Horses were very poor. Although compared to other comedies I suppose they did quite well to keep it going so far.

Don't dis blue peter, my wife was on it last year. But I didn't get a badge.

Xfiles, and Babylon 5 haven't been mentioned, though.

China Beach went a bit pants. They were kind of defeated from the start as the war does end eventually. However there was only so many war injuries and pearls of wisdom from the base hooker (Marg Helenberger in a star turn) that could be uttered. McMurphy's toughness and strength always impressed me. I always wanted to be a 'strong' person and there for others, however when circumstances arose when this was called on I found it rather boring and far less glamarous than I had expected.

Xena Warrior Princess also went a bit to the crapper. But gosh how I liked it when in full swing! Xena and Gabrielle in battle: the intimacy, the words unspoken but communicated thru looks, Zeus and his issues. I miss it.

Bad Girls.

First three or four seasons, top notch, gritty storylines with a bit of humour thrown in.

The rest turned into some camp, over the top, end of pier, type of storytelling.

The Simpsons. Still better than most things but the new stuff isn't in the same league as the old eps.
Lost. Was kind of interesting until it started going in circles.
Prison Break. They're out, enough already.

You lie! Bad Girls was excellent to the end. Yes they struggled a bit when Helen and Nikki left, but they rose again with the Fenner storyline. The last episode of Bad Girls was TV at it's best.

Prison Break started off as mostly ludicrous but with a faint air of believeability and then just went over the top ludicrous. Mind you T-Bag is still one of my favourite TV characters .

My Name is Earl had a bit of a wobble, well a big wobble, but the last few episodes have clawed things back a bit and it's still funnier than a lot of comedy on TV, though getting a little too sentimental for my liking at times.

I enjoyed the last series of Heroes, no complaints from me.

X-Files got so convoluted it disappeared up its own arse and reappeared out its own nostril. Very disappointing :(

Rubbish! :)

The Fenner storyline was like something out of Dallas.

(Fenner dons a blonde wig and knocks people over to frame Karen, thus the CCTV looks like it was Karen Betts doing it).
