Great stand ups

And as for that Dave Gorman, what the hell is he about? JUST. NOT. FUNNY.

i've seen Gorman live twice and he's fantastic. The thing is, he's not a stand-up in that sense and any attempt to show 30 seconds of clips isn't going to do him justivce, it's a cumulative, narrative kind of humour.

Whereas Tim Vine was perfect for his slot because he can get 10 times more jokes into his alloted time than anyone

but forgive me if I'm wrong - was half asleep after all, but Lee produced on of the most bigotted shite - right?

The joke about the Americans?

You may have a point, although perhaps I'm biased because I've seen that clip in the context of the whole routine. And making a joke about Americans not being a naturally curious people is nothing compared to Jim Davidson's rant about Gypsy women, or Andrew Dice Clay's hilarious nursery rhymes.

The whole point of that show is to play one kind of bigotry off against another. He starts off by getting the crowd to laugh at Americans, then he moved onto jokes about Scots (it was filmed in Glasgow, I think) and invites the now annoyed audience to consider the difference.

I was intrigued by that chap in the glasses, who was briefly in Pheonix Nights. Every stand-up who spoke about him said he was a master - and he did indeed appear to be as funny as fuck! So I'll be following that one up, just as soon as I remember his name.... (Cue Urban;) ).

.... Daniel Kitson

So what was the top 10 then if anyone can remember. I lasted to number 20 and gave up!

T'was a great show, head and shoulders above many in that format. That format always sucks. Ignoring the numbers (1, 47, whatever) it was great to get re-aquainted with some of the comics there. Manning and Chubby Brown, while being horrible in so many ways, are at times funny, but I wish Davidson's tongue would get cut out, he's a complete twazzock.
When watching it I was thinking/hoping that one day you'll be able to hit a button to download shows by people in these lists - came out wanting to check Sadowitz, and definetely want to hear some Lenny Bruce now.
Missed the beginning though - did Hancock make the grade? Or Spike Milligan, or the Goons, or The Goodies et al?
Mention this cos there did seem to be a year zero approach in the show, as if stand up really began in the 80s with a few exceptions, which is of course not true.

I watched some of it. Those top 100 shows really grate after.. well after you have seen more than 3 of them in a lifetime. The inanity of the commentary is what gets to me. They have all these, theoretically interesting, people in front of a camera and yet 90% of what they come out with is plattitude. I think I got to about 40.

The clips don't really do many of them justice. The best comedy acts have been ones that build. Where they start off getting a little laugh from this and that clever gag, and by the end they could pretty much do anything and it would be funny.

As far as the whole Roy Chubby Brown, Manning, Jethro, Davidson thing goes - Manning is the only one who has any comic skill.

list above ^^^

and i thought older acts were fairly well represented.

Mince, not mine. :(

Harry Hill is hysterical the first time you see him. Less so the second. etc etc.

Where was Simon Bligh? he used to be my favourite

So we've had three out of the top 100 comedians ever at Offline?

That's quite an achievement for a free club, innit? :D

i went to sleep cross last night cos of that program...

Harry fucking Hill above Bill Hicks:mad:
I'd go along with that - we are talking about COMEDIANS after all ie people who make you just laugh. Hicks just ranted eloquently and was only intermittently funny ha ha.

There were plenty of anomalies in positions, but how on earth the British public can place 52 comedians in front of Tommy Cooper is beyond belief. Its hardly surprising we end up with politicians like we do when the great voting public can get things of little importance so totally wrong!

I went to see Jerry Sadowitz a few years ago and was really disappointed. I really wanted to see his magic tricks, but didn't do any when I went to see him, just jokes.

It all went horribly wrong when a woman tried to leave the auditorium quietly after a string of rape gags, then Sadowitz started attacking her, asking why she was leaving. Reluctantly, she said she didn't find the jokes that funny because she had been raped. He put up a defiant front as she walked out, shouting abuse at her as she left, which was a really shitty thing to do and made him look like an utter cock.

I know if you're going to go to one of his gigs, you should expect to be shocked and offended, but his attack on the woman was a bit desperate.

Just noticed Chris Addison on the list – I saw him a couple of years ago and he was superb. He was trying out some material at the Latchmere in Battersea and there were just six of us in the audience, two of them being his wife and her mate. So he nipped down to the bar, bought us a bottle of wine and did his routine as if he were playing to a packed house – what could have been a disaster turned out to be a very enjoyable half-hour

Dave Chapelle: laid back and sharp. He is:cool:
Not seen his tv show but as a stand up- he's one of my faves.

Bernie Mac and Chris Rock. :D :D

Saw the prog. Enjoyed it mostly. :)

I like alot of them, I like all kinds of comedy. Some of my favs on that list though are...
Jo Brand
Victoria Wood
Bill Bailey
Eddie Izzard!! (LOVE him)
Peter kay
Billy!
