Great Singers Who Can't Sing

Windsor Davis and Don Estelle
Clive Dunn
and
The Goodies

have all appeared on TOTP, their limited vocal opportunties more than adequately compensated for by their refusal to take themselves seriously and an infectious sense of fun:)

Morrissey can sing as can Axl Rose .. I've heard them both singing in tune loads of times. Axl does a beautiful version of 'Danny Boy' for example. I saw him do it in a little bar in Phoenix and everyone was so emotional that we all just embraced. Axl sobbed uncontrollably as did I in fairness. Morrissey is only the best singer in the world also. He wouldn't be gynormous with the Latin community if he sang out of tune. He and Gloria Estefan often do duets together when they are touring the third world. You can't do that if you can't hold a note. Gloria wouldn't sing with him if he couldn't at least do a do re me in tune although she does sometimes get a bit annoyed when he overdoes the falsetto.
I fuckin love it when he does that me. Singing in tune isn't always a good thing though. Marc Almond is inclined to go a bit sharp but he still makes you well up when he sings 'say hello and wave goodbye' over the perfectly in tune keyboard or whatever like. Then there's Morton from Aha.
Fucking beautiful voice and that's it.
Ok!

LOL! :D

But no-one would class them as great singers.

If the thread was titled comedy acts who have made novelty records, you'd be spot on!

I'd have gone for..

Billy Bragg
Lenny Cohen
Neil Young
Jarvis Cocker
Serge Gainsbourg

although whether they can't actually sing is a personal thing, imo. I fuckin loves them all, regardless.

There are definite moments when The Beatles are off-key too.. one particular track, although I can't recall the title, without fail makes me "ouch" at the end where they're totally off-key.

Sorry.:o

William Shatner

Gedi Lee - Who ironically took lesson to sing later on and it made it worse not better. I like his early stuff best when he couldn't sing.

Youse lot are mentalists. Bowie and Simone could both sing the birds out of the trees.

Now- Nick Cave; there's a great singer who can't "sing". See also Shane Mcgowan and Tom Waits.

(ETA Lou Reed!)

Tom Waits?
Bob Dylan?
Leonard Cohen (sometimes)?
All great, none could really "sing".
Although I'd rather listen to any of them than Pavarotti, any day.

nick cave and neil young are the two that instantly spring to mind. fabulous!
I've never felt that Nick cave can't sing. He just mostly choses not to...
And Neil Young, well I think he can, but maybe that's just in comparison to me :)
