great holidays near ryan air airports

following the alghero thread i thought this could be interesting.

i am flying ryan air a lot and often wonder what and where are these places, and would they be any holiday worthy.

next sunday i will go to jerez which is in the south of spain and take the ferrry to morroco. apparantly it takes only 2.5 hours for £30 return. on my return trip i was planning to stay a couple of days in spain, my return flight goes to germany to see my parents (frankfurt). my return flight to london is from hamburg luebeck which i imagine might be a bit of a pain in the arse (because it is really outside of hamburg).

i know my parents fly to alghero this year to go on to corsica which apparantly is quite nearby and a nice trip as well.

have other people got experience with ryan air destinations where rather that being a pain far away from where you want to go it was an extra nice/or horrendous/d-i-y trip etc.

but also i don't really think that all this flying and budget flying is really good in the greater sense as well.

I remember an £80 taxi fare to skavasta airppot 70km outside of stockholm because we missed the bus despite being there in plenty of time and just got confused as to which was the right bus

errm, yes, i know what you mean. i had plenty of those too  . 2 missed flights. 1 taxi ride for euro 35 to make sure to get there in time. lots of annoyance.

and frankfurt hahn sucks actually too. euro 12 just to get to frankfurt and then for me another euro 6 to get to where i want to go (3 hours in total as opposed to 40 minutes from real frankfurt airport) and this is only one way. hence i often fly the traditional airlines as well.

but nevermind. there are now so many ryan air flights going to so many hot countries that there must be a lot of tips where one can holiday on a samll budget.

You could take ryanair to Trieste, spend some time there (it's a fascinating city) and either move across northern Italy to Venice and on to Verona, or eastwards into Slovenia. The latter would be best with a car, though, to take advantage of the countryside, food and booze just over the border. Neither option is particularly cheap, though.

We went to Barcelona (Girona) with Ryan Air (I think it was them anyway), and found that Girona is really a very nice place, very different to Barcelona, much more chilled.

aha, interesting tips. thanks :)

ryan air to berlin or dublin is really cool because they are flying to the main airports and you can get normal public transport to get into the city centre.

The whole area north of Barcelona up to the Pyrenees is magic. There's a national park called La Garrotxa or something, full of miniature overgrown volcanoes and medieval villages, great for camping and cycling around. Then there's the crazy village of Cadaques on the coast, near Dali's house at Port Lligat (sp).

I think Ryanair fly to Dinard which is next to the ancient port of St Malo in Brittany, where they have fantastic beaches, a beautiful walled town and a kerayzee annual festival called 'La Route Du Rock'. You can also get day trips from there to the Channel Islands.

It's not exactly hot, but Turin is a great place to go if you want a beautiful city with a refreshing lack of tourists. You can go and spot all the places where they filmed the Italian Job!

IIRC the airport isn't that far from the city and the alps are close by for hill-walking.

me and mrs b have a free ryanair flight so are looking at somewhere we can get to nice and easy from east midlands. turns out tarragona and nimes both look pretty darned nice, and sweetly romanesque, which is neat. try them mebbe. or malmo.

Bergerac in france is nice. lovely town, lovely countryside and the airport is about 10 mins out of the town.

Begerac tourist site

Nearby is Monbazilliac Chateau amongst the vineyards on top of a hill with free wine tasting and stunning views. its very romantic and you really feel that you have got away from it all.

hi,

i can actually report that the jerez route to go to morrokko is more of a pain in the butt than worth it. unless you have a lot of time then it is actually cool and saves money.

morrocco is so beautiful.

many greetings from g

Trieste

Trieste is also a useful airport to get you to Croatia. Just get the bus from the airport into the city then take your pick of where to go from there. Istria is beautiful, Porec especially. You can even get to Zagreb and Split if you're prepared to spend a bit of extra time on the bus.

Hamburg Lubec..

..isn't that difficult to get to, there's a bus goes there (public transport type bus) and also a coach organised by the airport.

Wierd fucking airport though!

That's a good thing to know for me! I'm flying from Eindhoven (Netherlands) to Edinburgh via Dublin, and have like 5 hours to stay in Dublin! YAY! I hope Dublin is a nice city to visit too! :D

Going to Alicante with the boys for ten days. I dunno if it's Ryanair but it's some cheapo airline!

Staying in a villa somewhere there.

Carcasson in France is bloody lovely. It is a world heritage site and is full of medevial castles and architecture. Im also a sucker for the Cathars stuff (and no I havent read that bloody Dan Brown book) which is all there.

Alicante is a beautiful city! Don't forget to go to the lovely beach San Juan a bit outside the city. See here

took a ryan air trip to nimes, in france. some nice things to see in nimes, but not somewhere you want to be stuck for too long. we hopped on a train and went to marseille, which has a lot of great stuff to see.

A friend just came to see me via Paris Beauvais. Beauvais isn't really Paris, and it's about an hour away but once you do get in on the coach, it's a very central location. I thought it'd be a nasty trip but they said it wasn't too bad.

ah yes, ryanair...

if you work on the assumption that you need to actually examine the map and see where you will be flying to then you can have a great time. I flew into hahn a few years ago and stayed nearby in trier.. lovely town. nice holiday..

be flexible and don't assume the airport is near somewhere until you do the research. To be fair to ryanair they do list travel times on their website

Try Leipzig also - great place to while away a weekend. And not too far from the airport .. er whassisname... altenburg...

Reus is a dull as shite town, but if you fancy some cheap and cheerful cheesy fun, salou is a mere flit away by bus.

Jerez ought to be close enough to Cadiz to be worth a trip.

And basically, just have an open mind about where you go and it can be a hoot...

yes jerez is very near cadiz and it is cheap to get there by public transport too.

the hamburg luebeck airport is also really easy to get to from central hamburg, it is really okay. and it is a tiny airport with a tent which resembles one that you could find on the oktober fest. it made me laugh...i like those small airports.

leipzig sounds inspiring i didn't even know they where flying there..

i never like hahn because it is near enough to my parents place but still far enough to be a pain. but it is always cheaper of course than the regular airlines so i have to do it more often than i like. i didn't know it was anywhere near trier. and it didn't know that triere was very exciting too... :)

See the black out periods - school holidays and that.

You have to pay taxes and costs as well. And you can only book to certain airports - see the website.

But I booked to Girona in early Dec and it was free!

Wow, how far north of Barcelona?

Genoa/Genova - it's got an interesting old city centre, much less touristy than most other maritime cities with such a long history.

There's a good rail service along the coast to the amazing scenery, and interesting mountain walking, in the Cinque Terre .
