Great film posters

After going through, there arn't many I think are great, they are OK but of all the ones listed here Metropolis is the best by miles. That is great poster. The others seems formulaic to me. Even Naked lunch is a Dali copy when it could be better.

I agree with your judgement regarding Metropolis - it's probably my favourite film poster and that of many others.

I disagree with your formulaic criticism. Film posters have a function to perform - conveying information about the film (who's in it, a hint at the kind of experience watching it will bring, something about the subject matter and even the plot). This function determines the form a film poster has to take and means that they are all formulaic. Even Metropolis - film info at the bottom, an image of an important character to a backdrop taken from the film - it's as formulaic as all the others.
 
Of course, film posters have a long way to go before they can compete with the posters from the heyday of the great stage magicians.
