Great Cover Versions

i have liza minelli (sp?) doing the pet shop boys' 'rent', orchestrated by anne dudley. suprisingly good.

also, the pet shop boys - go west. great stuff. :)

Sorry for being horribly pedantic, but they were called McCarthy (not The McCarthy's) :)

I thought I was the only one who'd notice/be irritated by that

Were they the "should the bible be banned" lot? It was on a flexidisc from the NME and stuck in the head rather.

They were.
they had their moments. Tim Gane went on to start Stereolab (who had a lot more, far better moments) with Laetitia Sadier a rabid McCarthy fan he met at one of their gigs.

my brain is full of this sort of rubbish.

pity me

from the protest song thread - The Pogues - And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

Ooh, I've not heard that. I should give it a listen. It's an awesome song, but the only version of it I have is by June Tabor, most of whose solo stuff is a bit too *worthy* for my taste.

It's on Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash -( last track on the origanal album) + bothe the recentish best ofs I think

the Fatima Mansions' version of Everything I Do (I do It For You) is both brilliant and slightly terrible at the same time...

A great tune, never actually clicked until about the 20th listen! Think I had it on the Manics 'Suicide is Painless' cover CD single.

Really like Flaming Lips version of Seven Nation Army,
Johnny Cash's cover of U2's 'ONE',
Crazyhead's cover of the Sonic's 'Have Love Will Travel',
Metallica cover of Budgie's 'Crash Course in Brain Surgery'.

the clash have a few great cover versions..

Police and Thieves
Wrong em boyo
junco partner (although there are loads of great versions of this song!)

others -

the specials? - message to you rudy, monkey man
madness - madness, one step beyond

now that im thinking, skas filled with great cover versions......

Welldone on not thinking that's the original.

But I did for years and years, and I think many people still do. That's how well they reinvented it. I think it's an astonishing cover. They didn't just make it their own, they totally re-imagined it. That's the way to do a cover I reckon.

I like them both very much, in very different ways. I think of them as not being the same song really. The original's excellent.
Yeh the original is wonderful, love northern soul. I can see why you don't think of them as the same song as they are very different. I just got sick of Soft Cells version as it was played to death, i think even Marc Almond got sick of performing it.

It was played to death. But I think there's enough distance now and the original's well known enough to be able to appreciate what an amazing cover it is. As I say, I think it's the best cover of all time. "Hurt" comes in at a very very close second.

Oh 'Hurt' by Johnny Cash is amazing and up there as one of the best cover versions . The video is very moving too, got quite emotional when i watched it for the first time :(

I cry like a baby whenever I see it. In fact the missus and I were listening to the album in the car with tears streaming down our cheeks last weekend. :D

Must be age.
