Great Cover Versions

All the Nirvana covers on their Unplugged. Their version of "Turnaround" by Devo (on Incesticide) is quite cool too.

I also think the Pixies cover of "head On" is better than the JAMC original.

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Cowboy Junkies - Powderfinger
Pixies - Head On
Ramones - Baby I Love You
Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquors - Winnebago Warrior
Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was
Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues

Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next
Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
Specials - Message to you Rudy
Janis Joplin - Summertime
Bette Midler - Stay with me
White Stripes - Jolene

My criteria for a good cover version is something that adds to the original rather than slavishly copying it. IMHO Bauhaus' version of "Third Uncle" does exactly that.

that's fair enough but you said it was better. I don't think it is myself, although I like it. It doesn't add a great deal either if we're honest about it, it's a bit faster, a bit muddier sounding, meh.

I quite like all the covers on the spaghetti incident. :D

Nashville Pussy do a pretty good cover of the Tatts 'Nice Boys'.

the invocation of 'hurt' is godwins law for covers threads. you'll all have to leave now, the thread is finished. :(

ohs noes but i posted it first its an obvious choice as being sung brilliantly by the late johnny cash. also liked his version of personal jesus.

Favourites? Off the top of my head......

Johnny Cash - Hurt
Afghan Whigs - If I Only Had a Heart
White Stripes - Jolene
Mark Lanegan - Carry Home
The Slits - Heard it Thru the Grapevine
Blondie - Denis
Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

why? i like bauhaus, but they just do nothing with that cover. it's pointless...

They do plenty; decent drumming rather than Trevor Boulder's jazzy noodlings, more feeling to the lyrics, and a great sense of drama that ain't present in Bowie's original.
