Gravy on chips - yay or nay?

At Ed's Diner (an American 50's style diner) here in London they do wet fries, which is chips and gravy.

Can any Americans tell me if this is a common thing or just something Ed's do?

Depends; if it's with a lovely steak and kidney pie, then yeah, I'll eschew ketchup and dunk the chips in the gravy. Otherwise... I'm not sure...
