Grant Sacked?

andy2002 - you didn't respond to my questions.

Yes, I did - message #48. Managers are meant to be arrogant, they're meant to go in and shake things up. Grant was supposed to completely change the way Chelsea played football - he failed to do so and that was one of the reasons he was sacked. And deservedly so.

Here's a link for the relevant article with a few juicy bits below...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/may/25/chelsea

After early sessions in which his methods were described as '25 years behind the times', Grant left most of the training in the hands of Steve Clarke, who continued to use many of Mourinho's techniques. Instead, the Israeli presented 'motivational' videos of the likes of basketball player Michael Jordan and athlete Haile Gebreselassie that were so well received by the team they used to play cards while watching them. It did not help that Grant struggled to hold the players' attention when he spoke to them as a group, nor that his spoken English was fractured.

'Not capable of tying Mourinho's shoelaces' was a common assessment of Grant, who had never coached outside Israel before his September appointment. He owed his promotion to his friendship with Roman Abramovich. Chelsea's players questioned Grant's substitutions, tactics, preparation for matches and ultimately his authority.

In the wake of woeful cup defeats to Tottenham and Barnsley, the players convened a team-only meeting in which they resolved to make the best of a season in which they could still challenge for two titles despite, rather than because of, a manager they never wanted. The team were 'on autopilot', according to Didier Drogba, feeding off the winning mentality and self-belief instilled in them while working within the 4-1-2-3 shape Mourinho had built for them. Clarke provided a critical link to that era of repeated success.

In terms of points, ignoring the hype and acknowledging the fact he was hired by the FAC winners before Chelsea, yeah, pretty, pretty-prettttttttay much.

It was reported that he was placed in Portsmouth by Roman, who paid his wages there, until he could move him to Chelsea. He spent most of his time in Portsmouth on the phone to Roman, according to Barclay talking about it on TV.

Grant had some meetings with another Russian billionaire, Arkady Gaydamak of Beitar Jerusalem, but eventually found himself working for his son, Alexandre, the owner of Portsmouth. To this day, nobody knows what Grant actually did as director of football at Fratton Park, but it gave him a year to get acquainted with the English game. Sometimes he turned up in unexpected places – when Chelsea hosted Liverpool in the autumn of 2006, the TV cameras zoomed in on Tiger Woods, but Grant was sitting nearby.

I was amused to see that Henk ten Cate has been given the boot too. Chelsea are saying that it's all to do with potential new managers wanting to bring in their own teams but I wonder if it's got anything to do with certain players (Carvalho, Lampard, Drogba, Essien) only agreeing to stay if he (and Grant) were kicked out.

Fair enough on Grant then, seems like he was a big imposter. Why would Abramovich do it though...?

Re: ten Cate, yeah that is pretty hilarious, he's apparently well miffed.

Aye, that's because he looks like a proper twat now after coming out in the Dutch press last week saying that Kenyon had told him that his job was safe.

After all, Peter Kenyon is a wanker. He should know that.

No, no it's definitely Kenyon...Blatter doesn't refer to football being a "brand". Blatter's an old fool, but Kenyon has been instrumental is sucking cash into certain clubs and fucking others over

Kenyon sold out the club he supported since he was a kid to help another club become more successful for slightly more money than the generous wedge he was already on!

I thought at the time that Ten Cate had only been brought in to cover for Grant's lack of coaching qualifications. There were a lot of media stories at the beginning about Grant knowing nothing about training.

helped turn Chelsea into a more hated club than Man Utd, which is quite an achievement in itself :D

Have you seen Blue Revolution, the DVD about Jose's achievements at Chelsea that was premiered the night he was sacked? There is a section of smug, self-satisfied Kenyon interviews that would make anyone want to puke. If you watch it, keep a sick-bag handy - you'll need it.

Think I heard about that. Just seeing him lead the players at the CL final, running with the Olympic fucking torch for fuck's sake...bloke is a complete cock

I can think of places I'd like him to stick his loser's medal.........

And his Olympic torch.

This probably sounds bizarre and ungrateful but I genuinely preferred it when we were owned by Bates, were lucky to finish fifth in the league and occasionally did quite well in a cup. I'll always love Jose, but Kenyon and Abramovich are everything I hate about the modern game.

Every long term Chelsea fan I know says the same thing. "Heart ripped out of the club" is common. Dunno how I'd feel if it happened to my lot. Ecstatic probably.

Unfortunately the club is in too much debt [mostly to Abramovich] to go back to those days.
Article about the club's funding
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/may/20/premierleague.chelsea
which ends
Chelsea's chairman, Bruce Buck, has stressed that Abramovich "loves football" and will not "walk away" from Chelsea.
If the owner's enthusiasm were ever to wane, and Abramovich decided he did want his loan back, the accounts show that Chelsea would have 18 months to find the money.

Anyone got £736M to spare?

I'll have a look down the back of the sofa... :)

You must have a big sofa:) Down the back of my sofa you only find the dog's toys. Never any cash.

To be serious, though, the only way we'll get rid of the Kenyon cabal in Chelsea is if another sleasy foreign billionaire bought the club .
Abramovich might give them all the boot though, if his next managerial experiment turns out as lousy as Grant. One can only hope.

Grant was still being named today as a possible replacement manager for MCity if they can't get Hughes. I can't believe it - before he took over Jose's team I doubt if a non-league team would even have considered him.

I can't imagine him in charge of any other PL team.

I ppresume manchini is going to be talked about as new chelsea/man city manager a lot now.

dave

I think that has died down now and the focus seems to be on Ancelotti. AC have apparently said they rebuffed a formal approach from Chelsea! I can see Mancini going to a team like City for some reason, he's won things but he's not in the upper echelons and a club with city's backing may be help towards getting him there if things work out.
