A miracle of 80s photomanipulation /\/\/\/\/\/\

I think this may be the first gig that I scream at ever :hmm:

un-fucking-believable.

One of the greatest gigs I've ever seen.

To watch a 61 year old woman sing Slave To The Rhythm without once dropping the hula hoop round her waist, introduce the band, do some vocal adlibbing, look hot, thanks the crowd and STILL have the hula hoop on 10 minutes later...

and also, Williams Blood might be the best song she's ever done.

awesome

I sat next to her on a transatlantic flight once. She was bloody amazing, especially in the morning when she started doing her stretches in the aisle. Everybody stopped to watch. :D

That was one of the greatest gigs of my life. She's a hero of mine and I saw her live! Slave to the Rhythm and La Vie En Rose were amazing.

I got a bit tearful when she came on - that's a first for me :D What a lady

Ooh! AND she became a human mirrorball!! Donned a bowler hat of mirrors and they shone a lazer onto it so all these little beams shot out – I nearly wet myself it was so beautiful :D

Why don't they have grace jones at glastonbury? Not asking anyone on here, just musing really....

There was a showpony plume thing.
the mirrored one.
one that made her head look like an orchid
a black and a white tophat
a pair of huge eyebrows that looked like insect feelers
a kind of Batman cum burkha thing
a solid plastic fake mohawk thing (looked like a racing bike's wheel cut in half)
some chainmail sorta number
a couple of similar ish kinda drapey / headscarfey ones

that's all i can remember

You spoiled it for me Geoff. I wanted to tell! :(

She came on and did Nightclubbing in the showpony one - it was like a plume of feathers shooting out of the top of her head.
The second hat was a huge silver metallic mohawk from the tip of her nose to the nape of her neck in sheet metal - fearsome!
Another favourite was the one that Geoff says looked like an orchid and it did! A cross between an orchid and the inside of a conch - sweeping under her eyes and across her brow and way out over her left shoulder. It was beautful, the colour of a conch and completely asymmetric and organic in appearance.
She did Jamaican Guy in a cream structured one that resembled a cross between a pagoda and samurai helmet with a longsleeved cape.
There were a couple of hoods but the best was the chainmail one - she was a knight with a thong on
The best effect was the glitterball bowler though.

Ohh! A flat plate style like a cymbal and she carried some cymbals to crash while she was singing wearing it...

Here's the eyebrow one:

Here is the pagoda one (maybe I described it badly - funny how your memory changes things):

See this could be the showpony plume but I don't remember the mask and I thought the plume was bigger. Maybe she didn't wear that one...

I've missed out loads but they were the second stars of the night for me.

And to top the night off, she was thanking loads of people at the end and I heard her say some names and turned to Geoff asking "who the fuck are Phil and Tracy???! Eh? Phil and Tracy!???"

Phillip Treacy, pie. Phillip. Treacy. Only the bloke who makes the bloody hats.

:D :D

Sounds like a fucking ace night.

it was. i really thought i'd kinda tick her off in the Eye Spy book of people you need to have seen. But actually it was a crazy exciting top quality night :D

Oh oh oh this is so unfair - I missed the performance of a lifetime out of poor organisation - why don't I buy tickets when they're available then worry about the logistics afterwards :( :( :(
Where else is she going on this tour?

:D

Deffo. Who's your dream gig Melinda?
It would have been the Algerian Rai gig of gigs- Faudel, Cheb Khaled and Rachid Taha for the 1-2-3 Soleil concert at Bercy, Paris. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wMtDwK02FKI

I *love* me some drum based cultural mash-ups: Rai/ Arabic/ Cuban/ samba/ reggaeton beats, soukous, a bit of hi life... I would have loved to have seen Ofra Haza...

So I guess Womad? :D:D

Ooh a Jill Scott and John Legend double header would be good :)

Hadag Nachash and MC Solaar!

Or George Benson.

Or the Pussycat Dolls (yeah, I know!)
