GPU Prices 2022 (and beyond)

The value proposition of used 3080s is pretty good, but I'm not going to budge from QHD for the next 4-5 years so anything higher than the 3060Ti is a bit of a waste. But I do admit that in used prices the performance to £ ratio is pretty consistent going up the line.

I think QHD is still fine. In face I appreciate other things more then resolution, like how much colours "pop". My OLED TV might have spoilt me on this. The 34" has the same pixel density as QHD and it's plenty for my eyes,

I've got a 48" OLED (C1). I do like it, but I'm not convinced it was worth double a similar sized conventional LCD panel. I'm certainly not sending it back, but if I was sent back in time I'm not sure I would buy it again. Though admittedly a part of that is LG's shit software.

I've the 55" version. Tbf I've not seen a lot of 4k panels, but I still find it stunning. I'd have loved to have got the 34" Alienware ultrawide OLED, but I can't justify spending that much on a monitor, the TV was a total indulgence, but I was moving house and wall mounting it.

Time has elapsed and Ebay refunded in 15 minutes after noting there was no shipping info posted.
Will go back to hunting a 3060Ti after the Christmas trip to the in-laws in France. Or maybe Zen 4 will get another price drop and I'll do the CPU instead.

I currently have a Asus GTX 960 Strix 2GB GDDR5, bought in 2015

Can I meaningfully upgrade this for £200 or less? It needs to be quiet too, so not some budget version with a hairdryer attached.

If you're patient (someone else has it, but it doesn't seem to work with his system so I'll see him in a few weeks to get it back), I've got a 1070 that I'd be happy to let go at half whatever Ebay flogs them for. But that's more a matter for PMs.

Thanks, that’s very kind of you but I need to give away my current PC to someone else this week so plan to assemble the new one next weekend.

Going to go for a MSI or Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super for £230ish.

In a moment of weakness I've just buckled and ordered an RTX 4070 due to Starfield coming out, it wasnt the most expensive but it certainly isnt what I'd call cheap, but compared to 2 years ago it boasts >RTX 3080 performance at about a grand less so that's something.

I'm using my mates Radeon rx580 at the moment so its going to be a massive improvement.

Will report back tomorrow after I've installed it and had a play around.

Although I must say I've been pretty underwhelmed with the nvidia 40 series and the 4070 seems the only one worth it atm.

Im using an rx580 8gb and a ryzen 5 2600x. Tbf it still runs most stuff reasonably well but the last cpl of times my son has come in he's said "oooh, that's laggy". Thinking of getting say a 3070,but i guess i will need to update the cpu too?

Monitor is 4k 32", if that makes a difference. Im not bothered about everything being ultra, but i want it to be smooth and quick.

Awesome work. I'm also looking forward to Starfield. It does seem like the 4070 and the TI are the best of this gen unless you have silly money for a 90.

Still not really got enough use out of the second hand 3080 I got myself for Xmas, but it's awesome when I do. Keep meaning to connect it to OLED TV downstairs.

My understanding is weirdly the higher then resolution, the less important the CPU is and the more you are GPU bound, so you'll definitely get an improvement.

Unless it's a really good deal on the 3070 I'd aim a little higher if you can for 4k.

Yeah mines going to be connected to my LG C1, so will hopefully look amazing.

Just been playing Forza 4 using the RX580 and it still looks great..

Yeah, I would think 4070/Ti would be a minimum for 4k. Which is a pity, because at 1080/1440 with the way the 4-series has disappointed the best deal going is a 3060Ti, which are getting down to £300 where they (IMO) should be.

I bet. I love my 3880x1440 on my desktop, but I think the next jump in visual quality will be from OLED monitors. Price is still a bit bonkers on them though.

I had a 3060ti previously but had to sell it when I lost my job, I loved that card tbh, sold it to my mate, who then lent me the 580 :D

Ok. Not sure I'm going to be paying 800 quid though.

Oh hang on, is everything on ebay going to be fucked bitcoin mining shit?

It's lottery I guess, there's no way to be sure, but with some it's obvious.

I got a 3080 around Xmas for £500 and it's been fine. eBay have a good returns policy and tbh if a mining card has been properly looked after, there no reason it shouldn't to fine. I had a quick look though and 3080s are still a similar price or more to 8 months ago!

Bitcoin mining is actually easier on the GPU than gaming. Miners want the best performance/watt and that's usually underclocking the GPU and then running 24/7. 24/7 operation being easier on electronics than on/off all the time. The risks of ex-mining cards are way overblown. The big risk is getting one from some small-time wanna-be miner who doesn't do these things. Then the poor thing's been run ragged.

That said, mining has been a pretty poor return since the 4-series launched so I'd imagine very few 4xxx cards have been subjected to it.

I've heard of them literally hosing them down before sale, so worth checking very carefuly for signs of rust.

That only matters in respect of they need to be dried properly. A good wash down is actually a part of the PCB manufacturing process. I've put keyboards through the dishwasher to get the gunk out. The only thing that matters in the end is not feeding them power while they're still wet.

But if they don't do it right, the card will simply be dead. It won't function oddly, it just won't function. Easy enough with Ebay buyer protection, though admittedly a right PITA. I honestly believe that the DOA rate from Ebay isn't a lot (as in, not an order of magnitude - it's certainly worse, but it's a few times a very low number) worse than the DOA rate from the manufacturer. The risk is far higher from someone who tweaks the thing within an inch of its life - then you run into cards that have been run beyond their limits and now can't meet their minimum speeds.

Going for an RX 6700xt I think. Do you reckon banging the RAM up from 16 to 32 will make any difference?
