GPU Prices 2022 (and beyond)

I wouldn't blame anyone for continuing to hold out, though. There are some issues with buying second-hand crypto mining cast-offs. They drive those things hard and don't treat 'em right, and before buying and inspecting it for yourself, you have no real idea what conditions they were kept in, or even how good the actual card is. I've heard of unscrupulous ex-miners boxing up their old GPUs to make them look newer than they actually are, in order to pump up the price or even to make dud cards look sellable.

Caveat emptor.

Not sure I’d want to risk getting an ex mining one. It’s like buying a car that used to be a taxi.
It's closer to buying a long distance salesman's car. Huge mileage, but easy going. Miners will set them to their most efficient speed, not the fastest one, so they've actually had a relatively easy go of it but they've been on 100% of the time.

Waiting for a £400 3060Ti. I have no delusions that the next gen won't have supply issues and crazy prices at release, and it meets my target of being about twice as fast as my 1070

I’m not really in the market for a new PC right now so I’ll be gutted if they start shooting up in price again. But surely confidence is now shot in the Bitcoin project?

It's had crashes before. Some people would say it's a great time to buy. I'm not going to though, but my colleague thinks its going to drop further and he will probably buy more when it does.

So it hasn't gone away then? Yeah, like the stock market a crash is the best time to buy unless it goes bust.

Pretty much. The rights and wrongs are best left to the other thread really, but it's crash is certainly good for GPU prices. Of course, Bitcoin hasn't been mined on regular PCs for years, but Ethereum has been and it's price is linked to bitcoin.

Perhaps I should be in the market for a new PC soon then...

yeah but how much power are they going to take? I suppose we could use the heat off the cards to heat our houses..

Unfortunately can't remember the link, but saw something recently that suggests that it might not be as much as first feared.

I'd also be surprised if "dropping" from say a 3090 to 4070 needs more power. Maybe 3090 to 4090 will though.

Hopefully I won't need to go above 4070 to run 3440x1440 nicely.

You can run that resolution nicely with the current gen of cards.

It looks like we're going to be well into next year before we get the mid range cards from AMD or Nvidia and I'm loosing patience slightly. My GeForce Now subscription will run out at the end of the year and I don't want to renew it. It seems like we're getting very close to 3080s getting sub £500 on eBay. I'm quite tempted, but also slightly torn as obviously it's a bit of a gamble.

I wouldn't bother with the 3080 right now, It maybe a good card but it will cost a fortune to run ( although may well heat your house up nicely)

My 3060ti is more than enough for the moment.

I guess it depends on the resolution? A 3060ti would be fine on my current 2560x1440 60htz screen, but I'd like to add a 3440x1440 and be able to play things on decent settings for a few years.

Need to get a better card before I can update the monitor, GFN doesn't support wider screens.

If you do upgrade and want to sell it, let me know :)

34" widescreen on it's way. So now looking for a graphics card. There's a few 3080s on eBay that around £500, which is what I'd like to pay, but it's often closer to £600. Cheapest I've seen new is £700. I'd hoped with the release of the 4 series we'd see bigger drops, but with the prices their at, I don't think anyone needs to. It's a shame AMD suck at ray tracing so much this generation as the 6800xt is as cheap £630 new.

What are people's thoughts about different brands of cards assuming there is no overclocking going on?

My Gainward ghost 3060ti is pretty good but can get a bit loud, I like Zotec cards (sp?) and have always been warned off Pailit cards.

Got annoyed at Plague Tale Requiem playing either slowly or ugly. (Seriously, most games these days look good at medium, but this looks like ass at anything under Ultra) Dropped £350 on a used 3060Ti on Ebay and I feel a little dirty for it. Not in a good way.

Latest AMD benchmarks out today for 7900 XTX. It's quicker then a 4080 in some stuff, slower in stuff that needs ray tracing and of course has a retail of a grand. It's a bit mental isn't it?

Frustratingly my GFN runs out next week, thought I had till Jan, been putting this off, but I'm not doing any gaming on the card I've currently got in my PC. So no gaming over xmas or find some cash to top up the savings fund. I'd hoped to mostly do this from selling stuff that I'm not using or is lying around the office at work (I have permission to do this). Time to make some more eBay listings.

Aaaaand the seller has vanished off the face of the Earth. And I can't really bid on another until this one gets cancelled, so no Christmas upgrade for me.

That's a fucker. Just radio silence? I'd started looking at Facebook, but there's a lot to be said for the buyer protection on eBay.

Well I've dusted out my old gixen account and I'm starting to place bids on 3080s. I'm not expecting to get one soon, but sometimes they do go for what I'm willing to pay.

Does anyone stream games locally? I'm going to be pretty chuffed to use the 34" ultrawide properly (black borders at the moment), but there's going to be the odd time I'd to do some console type gaming on the TV downstairs, mostly when my OH is out to keep the dog company. I know Nvidia and Steam have their own versions of this tech.

It's bonkers that resolutions have marched on so much and GPUs are only really catching up a massive cost. I'm looking forward to the point in a few years when mid range cards can do 4k @ 120htz, which I think is something even a 3080 struggles with.
