Govt. preparations for Trident

Luther Blissett

What do we collectively know about the Govts. preparations for Trident¿

I heard that the Govt. are already building a £30million(?) installation ahead of any debates/votes/ at Aldermaston in advance of any "decision".- making these Parliamentary measures a matter of 'show politics' - the deal is already 'done', and the Govt. is going through the motions.

I heard that it will cost around £1 billion a year over the next 26 years excluding inflation to rebuild and operate Trident submarines/warheads/operational forces, including inflation this will be around 3 times the cost at around £75 billion.

We are being pushed headlong into keeping WMD against a backdrop of international committment to reduce WMD, whilst our Govt. hypocritically participates in forcing sanctions and threatening war upon other countries who might try to aquire them.

This proves that UK has no committment to reduce WMD and contributes to the increase in WMD, destroying the illusion of an ethical high ground that's projected by the UK Govt. into our role in international politics.

US as signatory to the NPT has continously flaunted it's committment to peaceful nuclear technology.
UK as signatory to the NPT has headed down the same route.

What do you all think about signing up to another 26 years of nuclear power/arms at the same time as UK/US via UN is putting pressure on Iran to cease it's development of nuclear power?

What do you all think of the facts that USA is assisting Libya to get nuclear power around 4 years after Libya was persuaded to abandon it's nuclear weapons program.

What do you think about USA's development of yet another generation of nuclear weaponry (bunker busters, more mini nukes) which 4 years after announcement of the plans to develop, it now is threatening to try out on Iran's fledgling nuclear power stations?

I also hear that 'naked protests' against the nuclear arms race are on the cards - who's with us?

The Aldermarston project (Orion?) is looking atr ways of modelling nuclear exploions so that new upgrades don't need to use nuclear tests. Not nice but which is preferable. A spin-off of which will be experiments into laser confinement of fusion reactions.

The governemnt have been recruiting the technical personnel required & enlarging/modernising aldermaston since the mid-late 90's. Trident II has been in planning development for nearly 10 years.

The Trident we have now on the Vanguard class subs is Trident II. The new system will be Trident II D5LE carried on new generation of submarines.
