I certainly dont find it 'cool'-and I don't think in some cases people laugh because they find it funny. It's more like a nervous laugh-in the same way some might react to a sequence in a horror film.

The violence in goodfellas is real brutal and within context. In films like Commando where it becomes almost cartoon like, then thats the real glamourisation of violence IMO.
I did have a few fantasies of fucking a couple of people up like Pesci in Casino with that pen :o

But as an audience we laugh along, we find it cool, we find it exciting. I deffo think these films can feed into a culture of violence.

I was thinking about this, and realised something that's immensely subtle about Goodfellas, and how far under Henry's skin you get. The Spider getting shot scenes are very, very uneasy and tense, and when he's shot and killed I certainly had a sensation of 'Why? That was so pointless!' which is clearly how Henry feels, as opposed to Pesci's madness and De Niro's indifference to it all...

Yeah, I mean, I've actually known some fairly violent blokes who just worshipped the whole De Niro/Scorsese world.
One bloke I knew (who I don't hang around with any more) used to glaze over just before he decked someone (usually out of the blue).
One day at a party he was standing talking to someone, who was clearly irritating him. He starting saying "I thought you said, 'I'm all right, Spider'" (or whatever it is that Pesci says in the film), and the guy he was talking to just got confused. Anyway, I pulled that guy away from my friend as quickly as I could :D.
Now, I recognise that my former mate was a bit of a psycho, but what I mean is that, even if none of you find the violence exciting or glamourous, there are plenty of people who do (and not just the extreme example I've given here).

alsoknownas - I know, I've known people like that too. But it goes back to the whole censorship argument doesn't it? I do actually like some violent stuff, but hate violence in real life - but some people adopt it as a lifestyle. Wanna-be Gs - what can you do?

Yeah, I wouldn't want to censor or ban it. I used to really love Scorsese's work, but now I've got mixed feelings about it. I've still got great admiration for him as a filmmaker, but I tend to think that it feeds into some kind of macho bullshit that I'm well fed up of. :):(

Other.
When Karen wants some money, goes down on Henry & he says "Oh alright" Always makes me chuckle.

Breaking it down into scenes does reinforce just how strong a piece of filmmaking this is.

Doesn't it just! I love the film, it's one of my all-time favourites, but looking at each scene individually (the ones in the list and more) makes you realise just how good it really is.
