Goodbye Observer Music Monthly mag

the implication with Observer Woman was that if you didn't like or want that certain handbag there was something wrong with you.
That's true of all the Guardian/Observer sections, though, isn't it? (And, to be fair, the Indy & Times and so on).

Well, not handbags always. But it's all aspirational, and aimed at the affluent.

I suppose so :) - I think it was just distilled into a fine art form in the OW!
You may be right. It's the restaurant reviews that get me, the ones that talk as if you'd spend that amount of money a couple of times a week, rather than on very special occasions, when you've saved up.

I broadly agree, but not strictly always in all sections. Eg last Saturday the Saturday colour supp, 'aspiration' loaded as it was like you say   , there was also an excellent feature by John Vidal on the upcoming Copenhagen climate summit shenanigans.

Such articles are in the minority sure, but if you read selectively the Sat Guardian and to a much lesser extent the Obs, can be useful for stuff like that example.

Sure, that stuff is there. But then there's always, very close by, a couple of pages of (to me) expensive overseas holidays. Climate change crusades next to carbon disastrous tourism. Look out for it tomorrow. Do a little column inch count for your own amusement.

The problem is that if those papers dropped that kind of advertising, they wouldn't be able to fund themselves/continue at their current price.

The vast majority of weekend supplements in all papers are dedicated to selling things, like catalogues really, because that's the only way to plug the gaps in their declining revenue.

I wonder whether people here have the same reaction against the websites of these papers when they go there to visit and read the articles surrounded by banner ads for cars and so on.

I agree others , there was the odd good article but other than that it was the same old interviews with people you don't need to know any more about and lazy journo lists and overly keen reviews of mediocre albums.

Can anyone recommend a good music mag , Word ?

or Fact Magazine

For a slice of seriousness The Wire

danny la rouge that is the strangest internet gripe i've seen in a while. :)

assembely is more involving than idly waiting behind a counter for custom.

In fact I'm not at all sure I'm going to be able to cope with the new format Observer at all any more but I can't cope with the Independent on Sunday, and if you think the politics, middleclassness, lifestyleism and consumerism of the Obs or Indie are bad, then the Telegraph and Times shouldn't be touched with any leftie's bargepole on any of those 4 grounds x ten! ....

This.
