good old movies

The Third Man
The Man Who Could Work Miracles
Goodbye Mr Chips
The Loved One
Kind Hearts and Coronets (any Ealing really but that's the best)
Duck Soup
The Night of the Hunter

Harvey (comedy - man with imaginary bunny - i have a copy you can borrow)
Kind Heart and Cornets (Ealing comedy - excellent!!)
Some like it hot (cross dressing comedy with Marilyn Monroe)
The odd couple (old but colour comedy movie - two blokes who get on each other's nerves)
Vertigo (also colour hitchcock movie -fab thriller)
His girl Friday ( quick witted comedy - cary grant being handsome)
les diaboliques (French thriller - excellent!)
Carnival of souls ( horror - woooo creepy - good stuff)

The Awful Truth with Cary Grant- me and the bloke watched this accidently the other day, neither of us having watched many black and white films, and this is a gem! Proper belly laughs throughout.

rififi - the best heist movie ever. the key scene, where they carry out the robbery, is conducted in complete silence, but remains gripping for it's entire 32 minutes.

absolutely brilliant... i've not seen any of the director's othe movies, but he's a noir legend (plus he was blacklisted for being a commie).

"A bout de souffle"

"La dolce vita"

"The exterminating angel"

"Les enfants du paradis"

Someone else already said: "Kind hearts and coronets"

"I'm all right Jack"

"Throne of blood"

Billy Liar - old British movie - young man with overactive imagination
Guess whose coming to dinner - 1967 colour
The 39 steps - Hitchcock
The lady vanishes - Hitchcock (original filmed in Haggerston's gainsborough studios)

And I'm still waiting to get a copy of freaks...banned movie using real 'freaks' made in the 30s.

And laurel and hardy can be quite funny. We at work like this clip:

stray dog - a fine kurusawa film based in japan just after the second world war - a policeman gets his gun stolen, and spends the rest of the film hunting down the man who stole it...

Now, Voyager.

A magnificent performance from Bette Davis, who stops the film being in any way sentimental. Plus the "lighting two fags at once" scene, which launched a thousand cheesy romantic gestures.

all about Eve - amazing acting - great plot (bette davis too)
Of human bondage -another Bette Davis (with awful English accent)
Waterloo bridge - depressing moralistic tale but worth a watch

I think there's a strong "anything with Bette Davis" theme emerging here. Best screen actress of her generation, mind, and up there with best of all time, IMO.

of the hitchcock movies, i like the lady vanishes (did he do two versions of this? the b&w one if he did), and north by northwest.

The Elephant Man!!!

well, it is in black and white :p

(the first time I saw it, purely by accident, I didn't know anything about it, and was convinced it was an 'old' film)

I really like 'A streetcar named desire' (Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando)

Cat on a hot tin roof is excellent too...

(maybe we need to do an old movie evening....)

I have streetcar on dvd :) I've watched bits of Cat on a hot tin roof, but can't remember much, only that Liz Taylor and Paul Newman were on it.

Liz and Paul are great - I'd never really watched liz taylor in anything before but the story is fantastic and it's quite clear from the layout of the film that it's a play turned into a movie.

Some like it hot
The Battleship Potemkin
12 Angry men
The Magnificent Ambersons
Suddenly
The Stranger
The hunchback of Notre Dame
The Big Heat
Went the day well
Rome Citta Aperta (Rome open city)
All quiet on the Western Front
Nosferatu
It's a wonderful life
Shenandoah
The odd couple
Casablanca
The African Queen
Victim
Touch of Evil
Cool Hand Luke

To name but a few

Good old English films include

"Spring And Port Wine" - cheesy, nostalgic but quite moving
"The Browning Version" - Michael Redgrave is brilliant

Someone else mentioned "Taste Of Honey" - Dora Bryan is a revelation
