Good indian food delivery in/to Brixton?

Gousia is excellent IMO.

Fujiyama deliver if you wanted Japanese.

What the Organ said. We had a curry from Gousia last night, pretty good if a tad mean on the chicken.
Can't praise Khan's too highly, obviously.

chilli spices - very good quality curries. and they can deliver to estates. and if you're lucky, you get to meet the indian delivery man with ginger hair and missing fingers.

We always use Khan's. Gave up on Chilli Spice after they replaced the lamb in their dishes with squash balls.

Khan's works best as a sit down neighbourhood restaurant imo - it does some of the old faves very well and I'm really happy in there with a couple of dishes and some dahl between us. You can find cheaper comparable food and more varied menus in Tooting (and beyond) but it's consistently well cooked and fresh tasting in Khans.

Would still kill for the equivalent of a Mirch Masala/Lahore Kebab House or something like Vauxhall's superlative Hot Stuff on our doorstep though. Khan's is a little too predictable and their tandoor breads and meats are average at best.

For me, I'd be happy ordering from:

The Chutney (although has been hit and miss of late, but really cheap and fast delivery)
Gousia

But the best available to me through www.hungryhouse.co.uk is:

Spice Republic in East Dulwich

That shit is gooooooood

Hot Stuff....gone a bit downhill from its golden era when Bilay and Abdul were running the kitchen. Also got more expensive over the same period.

Still not a bad local retaurant though, I have to admit, I wouldn't want to diss it totally. On a summer evening it's a fantastic place to sit outside, or order a takeaway and sit in Nolan's over a pint while they cook it up.

But there was a time it was the Best Indian Cafe in the world, no question about it. I remember vans with asian brummie-accented drivers turning up and buying loads of frozen 10 litre vats of Bilay's sauces to take home. I got chatting with one once, I kind of assumed he was down on business and stocking up while he was here but no, he had driven down just for the food...that's some recommendation.

I've only been to Hot Stuff recently and it was on great form.

I did however let the friendly owner choose what we were going to eat and he did a fine job. Fantastic mixed bhajees - about as far removed from the normal deep fried greaseballs as you could ask for, chilli paneer and some wonderful mains including an excellent masala fish.

In no position to compare it to its past, but it was excellent that night - the rewarding thing being that the dishes were genuinely different from the norm. Khans does the 'vanilla'/ordinary indian dishes very well, but Hot Stuff boasted some different, almost homemade tasting, things on the menu. Reasonably priced too - we left absolutely stuffed for about £15 a head. Any more eaten and I fear we'd have popped.

I have realised I am being a total snob! You are right it is great. But it was at least as good, hmm maybe better - and definitely cheaper - once upon a time.

The owner now is Bilay and Abdul's son, whose name I have completely forgotten offhand, and he is a very nice guy and he will choose well if you let him. Actually one of the nicest things I have ever eaten was a toasted sandwich with left over sag-aloo and the sauce from a chicken madras mixed up which he had made as an experiment and gave me a half of to taste. It was awesome.

Ach, I wouldn't worry. When one of your old faves seems to change over the years and gets known to more, it's almost natural to think back to the 'good old days.'

I feel similarly protective to The Gallery on Brixton Hill for example, despite the fact it's not been quite as special for the last few years, and to a certain extent Gousia which, for one takeaway delivery at least, set a standard that it could never hope to reach again.

If you haven't been to Mirch Masala or Lahore Kebab House then I'd urge you to go. Eat their spicy tandoor lamb chops and be very happy indeed.

It's fantasies of my mis-spent youth I am being nostalgic about...

Where are Mirch Masala and Lahore Kebab House? I spent some time living in Egypt and Sudan many moons ago and I am very partial to a decent kebab - one thing I have to admit that North London totally kicks South London's ass over is kebabs.

Mirch Masala has branches in Tooting, Norbury, Wembley(ish) and now Aldgate. Lahore Kebab House is Whitechapel/Aldgate. Can't really recommend them both highly enough - they do simple tandoor meats exceptionally well. Try their butter chicken, lamb chop, kebabs and wonderful fresh breads and you'll soon forget that North London place.

The Norbury branch of Mirch has recently taken over the next door shop and has gone a bit upmarket on the old Formica tables. Still comparatively cheap mind.

Lahore Kebab House is comparable, perhaps better slightly at curries and nearly as good at the meats. A big birthday group went recently and we only paid £15 a head for a veritable feast .

Both places are BYO too and can be very busy. Go and check them out.

If you're in that area then the best (imo) is New tayyabs on Fieldgate Street behind the mosque. Very busy these days though.

Too busy on peak times for a comfortable eating experience :( I always check when I walk down to Lahore's, and the queue allways stretches halfway around the resteraunt

I've only been to Tayyabs a couple of times and it's disappointed a little.

TBH I reckon it was the people around that were the problem more than the food, albeit some of the 'curry' dishes were very greasy. Lahore's seemed more comfortable, but they're both comparable.

And he has lovely eyes :)

I live in Stockwell so don't know about delivery - we use Haweli in Clapham south. It's south indian cuisine and I'm vege - favourites are aloo methi (potato dish) and subz badami veg and cashew curry - but don't expect runny curry.

Ta for the info mate - I've realised that I have actually been to Lahore Kebab; I had forgotten the name and I thought you were talking about some hidden Brixton gem. It is excellent, as you say.

I'd never noticed his eyes...but the curry toasty will always have a place in my heart.

So exactly what does a curry toasty consist of?

Can't remember what I was told exactly...think sag aloo/madras (quite hot). But t'was the summer before last.

Go in and ask for one! Power-ordering, off-menu. Very NY.

"a curry toasty? what do you want in it?"

"daahhling - surprise me!"

Doesn't the toast go a bit soggy?

Au contraire, it was close to being the nicest thing I have ever eaten. Perhaps it has got better in my imagination over time...I remember it was a lovely sunny day and I had a shocking hangover, these things can influence ones perception.

A toastie is the quickest and simplest way to use up leftover pasta sauce/curry/chille etc. Always a winner :)

Aye, many a sauce, soup and casserole taste nicer the day after they are made.

Tried Gousia last night and I must say I was in no way disapointed. Had the gousia de-luxe, which is essentially a chicken balti, and it was pretty good. The nan bread was excellent, really did the job. The only thing which dissapointed me was the vegetable pakora, which was very unusual and slightly soggy. Never tried veg pakora like that before and I'd never order it from there again. Their lime pickle was a bit rubbish too. The curry was good, but I dunno, it wasn't so good that I wouldn't check out Khans next time probably, and decide my favourite for future orders.

Pisses all over anywhere else i've tried though, and I wouldn't have found it without you guys, so cheers!
