Good car for a first time driver

i like my kia picanto. cheap, five doors, easy to park.

Kia fucking Picanto??

You are not wise in the ways of tiresome brand snobbery.
Mine's a Nissan Micra, 1999 - good vintage.
Perfect for a learner - 5 grand* and it's yours.

* - yes, I AM avin' a larf!

I reject your brand snobbery and see you a manufacturer that gives a 7 year parts warranty as standard. They're really decent quality cars.

I like micras too, mind - but they're more expensive.

oh, oh... and never buy a red vauxhall of a certain age-range! (edit - from a quick google, this may still be an issue)

they fade. really, really badly. it's a thing.

Mine is a really old one and only worth £400 tops but I really don't want to sell it, hence the ludicrously inflated price tag. ;)

Before you'd even posted the pic I knew you meant the red ones. :D

Why just the red ones? Who knows...

edit: greater absorption of higher energy light bandwidths seems to be the internet consensus...

I've just passed my driving test (managed to blitz it in 30 hours over 8 weeks), so now I need to buy a car. I know absolutely nothing about cars.

Budget is around £5,000 (maybe more if it's available on finance) and I want something that's reliable, fairly cheap to run and will give me as cheap tax/insurance as possible.

What would people recommend, both in terms of make/model as well as where to get it from? All advice gratefully received!

I'm tempted by a VW Up!, which I can get on finance second hand, two years old and 25,000 miles on the clock for £150 a month. Anyone want to dissuade me from that immediately?
There are similar offerings in Citroen/VW/Peugeot. Bear in mind the resale value and whether you expect to carry dogs/kids/munty mates.

A slightly sturdier & larger option would be a used nu-skool Micra. Look for an upgraded stereo - the ones with sat-nav and a 6-speaker system have pretty rinse-out sound quality for the size of car. The right age + diesel should give you a nearly free tax bracket and low cost city and country driving.

Who would spend 5000 grand on their first car? Can you even buy cars that cost that much?!

Grr at typing on a smart phone and not proof reading

*shakes fist at Sky*

Still I'd not spend 5 grand or would not of got hp for my first car, nice little slow roundabout so your in no way even tempted to speed. As that 6 points bit is a bastard for the first 2 years and even at 32 I was getting 2grand quotes on insurance

Plus If you total it whilst learning to drive

*shrugs*

It's not just Astras that fade. My sister's red Micra did too. Don't buy red cars.

Anyway strung out - I'd buy the best car you can buy for your money and don't worry too much about the mod cons - they're nice to haves which will cost you in terms of build quality and longevity and can be retro fitted cheaply and easily. That first car you posted? That's a fuckton of mileage in a short time for a little car with a small engine. I wouldn't look at a car of that size engine/age with more than 10k on the clock. And as mauvais says, finance deals are really expensive. Get a loan from the bank - it's cheaper and it gives you haggle room.

I'm not sure why you've decided on 5k. You can get a decent car for 1.5k ime. I've had a 1.5k clio for a year and it sailed though it's recent mot no problems at all. it's got 50k miles and a new cam belt.

I was told the opposite. I went to the bank for a loan for a car and they told me I'd get a much better deal on finance.

I've got an 08 Corsa. It's a bit dull but very reliable, cheap to run and the tax is only 30 quid a year.

Go for an Eco model for the cheap tax.

Friend of mine has a Skoda and she's really happy with it.

Wow really? :o Maybe I'm thinking of lease deals which always seem like an utter swizz to me. I guess the important thing is to check everything out. I know from my horrible forays into buying a car from a dealer last year, it just felt like they were trying to bamboozle me at every turn. Plus they thought I was an idiot because I was a woman. I may be an idiot but my gender has bugger all to do with it. They're a bunch of shysters though, I do know that.

57 - 59 reg Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla. Don't get a diesel and don't get a manual.

It will be boringly reliable for 5 years at which point you will be able to sell it for 50% of what you paid for it.

TBH if strung out has passed in a manual they probably should get a manual so they can lay down some solid driving foundations.

Diesel may be more expensive, but it really depends on the car. Lots of post-2010 models drive like a petrol and use less fuel than one, so there's no sacrifice on drive quality or running costs.

I've got a nice focus for sale (in bristol) for about a grand under your budget. It's the boyfriend's and only being sold because he's lost his license through his epilepsy. Solid history and low mileage.
Oh really? Have you got any further info, because I may be interested (if I can get hold of the cash in time for you). Various people have recommended Ford Foci.

If you buy a red car don't worry about fading. Mopping it once a year or, better, when it needs it, and keeping it polished with an appropriate wax will stop this. Here in Spain it is rare to see faded cars.

Sure. It'll be going on the market next week and you're welcome to come and look at it before we put the ad in auto trader. If you're interested in that point we can probably hold onto it for a week or so while you sort out finance.

It's got a full service history and it's been stored (properly) off the road since December (when my boyfriend had his first seizure) which is why the mileage is a quite a bit lower than average. It's just been put back on the road, MOTd, taxed and fully serviced ready to be sold. I can't remember the plate as it's not mine, but I can get some pictures taken for you tonight and give you the other half's phone number if you want to talk about it. He's a bit gutted to be selling it tbh, but there's no point in us continuing to store a car when he's having seizures every six months.

They didn't have any lacquer, I think. There are Peugeots (e.g. 206) of the same era whose red paint always looks good.

Driving to my girlfriend's house 15 miles away a couple of times a week, driving to my parents' house 5 miles away a couple of times a week, the odd road trip down to Cornwall 250 miles away a couple of times a year. Generally driving around Bristol on errands.

I want it to be comfortable, easy to drive, and have a few mod cons.
Also needs to be able to get to Gateshead, Southport etc ;)
