Savage Planet

...incredibly disturbing animation...

You beat me to it!

I got taken to see this when it was originally released in the early seventies; I was only five.

A total headfuck, and until it was released on video in the nineties, I was half-convinced it was nothing more than a Bosch-style nightmare I'd once had... :D

I'm confused as to why Firky says Spirited Away is not allowed, then mentions a Ghibli animated film as his favourite.

Anyway, another vote for Totoro as my favourite.

As for Western films....Toy Story!

Paprika is fucking incredible, really can't recommend it enough
Tekkonkinkreet is likewise
The Girl who leaped through time is alright
All the Studio Ghibli ones are well worth a look, my favourite is Nausicaa which is probably a bit under celebrated, like Grave of the Fireflies
5cms per second

Incidentally, dunno if you guys are aware but there is a Studio Ghibli museum in Tokyo, which is well worth a look. It has a catbus for kids to clamber all over and a giant robot statue from Laputa to pose with outside. It's definitely not worth going to Tokyo for specifically but definitely worth checking out if you're there.

I love Karel Zeman's stop motion films, especially 'the sorcerer's apprentice'.

Zeman on Wikipedia here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Zeman

and scenes from 'the sorcerer's apprentice' on youtube:

I saw that film on telly a few times when I was a kid, very very scary, but brilliant story. Sadly it's really difficult to get hold of his films, as far as I know there's only a Japanese DVD retrospective available.

They're busy filming 'the sorcerer's apprentice' in Germany at the moment, so I'm hoping Karel Zeman's animation gets published on the back of that.

Another vote for Iron Giant, but Firky probably wouldn't enjoy it cos of the warm hearted message :D

ummm... dunno

not really into animated films... i find them a bit short... much perfer an ova series or longer show

as for miyazaki i'll ave to vote for cagliostro of course... just because i'm a geek

Anything by Miyazaki...esp Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind...but Totoro FTW. Always lifts my spirits no matter how low i'm feeling.

Yeah My Neighbour Totoro is fantastic, one of the happiest films I've ever seen. Princess Mononoke is awesome though, a truly epic tale.

Same thing happened to me

It was on TV last year and I thought it was a dream I'd had until then

Another thing I noticed...

There are no black people in it! So it looks like Whitey wins in the end. Just me, my honkies and a fucking shite robot.

Pass me the gun. The future is shit.

Thought it was shite myself. Middle class liberal film about errr middle class liberals.

So you some kind of Disney computer generated class warrior then? The elitist, liberal, media establishment must be crapping itself. :D

e2a: Give 'The man who planted trees' a go. Excellent animation imo.

who framed roger rabbit... jessica rabbit was the woman of my dreams until at least the age of 23

I wish I could fit that as my tagline :D
