Going Vegan

Mae, all the recipes i've posted on the recipe wiki are vegan. I also put other people's vegan recipes into one list, but someone obviously didn't like that, so you'll have to search for yourself... *

Yup I found your thread on the vegan recipes, didn't want to bump it as I felt I'd be invading the forum with veganess, but fuck it I will :D its a good thread

The wiki is still ordered in vegan sections, so dunno what you mean about someone not liking it

Oh right- the last time i looked, somene had removed the vegan category and lumped it all under vegetarian. That was a while ago though

BUMP!

How's it going crustychick? I started a few weeks ago from veggie, s'all good except I've become addicted to crystalised ginger (in fact i think this has nothing to do with being vegan, hah).

Anyone got any delicious recipes they feel the burning need to share?

Oh also I'm dealing with the nothing-to-eat-during-the-day problem by stalking and mimicing these awesome people: http://www.flickr.com/groups/veganbento

having just got back from almost two weeks in wales, it's actually been going pretty darn good! eating out is slightly problematic but not overly so... considering - have had to only have chips just a couple of times, so that's not so bad - otherwise it's very very easy and lovely. i must say that the £20 vegan easter egg from hotel chocolat has put paid to any suggestion that I might lose weight doing this though!!

oh, and good luck mae! it's a brilliant lifestyle choice - I don't see me going back now..., i have no desire for dairy or cheese or even eggses... (except perhaps cadbury's creme eggses  ;))

i cant understand it at all. The foods seem so limited and no cheese is just crazy. A world without spag bol, chorizo, steak, omelettes, cheese on toast?? No way!!

I had spag bol for lunch

and you can have cheese on toast with vegan cheese, most are rank, but theres a few (like a mozzerella one by a company called cheezley) that fill the gap. To be honest, you get used to other yummy stuff and end up craving that instead. like I rarely crave a fried egg sandwich now, but I do lie awake at night fantasising about green lentil spaghetti or birds eye potato waffles :o

Also, it's reaaalllly not limited, when I was veggie i'd always have eggs or cheese for lunch, you have to be much more inventive. I've never done the meat thang, but Mr s reckons his diet is way more exciting now as when he ate meat he'd base his entire meal aroud it, now we try lots of different new things and combinations. Nom nom  It's not all mung beans and tofu :D

not that there's actually anything wrong with mung beans and tofu :hmm:

True, true. I just think that a lot of non-vegans, especially meat eaters, get a bit put off by "whole food" type meals, I like to lure them in with a fry up, roast dinner, burger or pasta then hit em with the lentils and sunflower seeds when their guards down :D

how would you make a delicious and filling vegan dinner for around five people, (inc a meat eater?)

I am thinking I would parboil then roast a load of winter vegetables like sweet potato, butternut squash, parsnips and onions, in olive oil, lemon wedges, and fennel seeds. Served with balsamic and wholegrain mustard.

would that do?

no protein  tsk tsk :p

or indeed carbohydrate.... not so much filling then ;)

Roasted root vegetables on its own is pretty boring. The thought off adding poncey shite like lemons and vinegar .., fuck me, are you trying to make your guests puke? Sorry for being unhelpful but am pissed and posting from a mobile fone

I'd lose the vineger and mustard, but I looove roasted veg in lemon, not had with fennel seeds though., but roasted fennel is lush. I reckon that'd be nice with maybe some coucous with a big dollop of homous, a nice tomatoey sauce (cok garlic, add tin toms and reduce with some sugar and sweet chilli sauce) or another sauce you like so it's not too dry, a beany salad (few tins mixed beans with some cucumber, pepper, sweetcorn in a dresing) and maybe some nice bread.

I like meals that are lots of little bits :D

What about getting some mushrooms and roasting them in the oven for about ten minutes with lots of garlic and olve oil?

Serve with some crusty bread to mop up the juices.

the mention of butternut squash reminds me of the lushest thing ever...it was with a different squash but it'd work....I roasted it in chunks, just in all (parboiled it first n shook it like doing roast spuds) and it went all crispy, looked like chicken nuggets or somat, and dipped the bits in a creamy mushroom sauce....mmmmmmmm

roasted veg like mushrooms is yum with pesto (vegan if that's your thang) in a panini. And roasted garlis....*drools*

excellent extras there, espesh the hummus. I have actually cooked the it for my pals before and they love it!

I bet the Editor sneaks down an alleyway with a burger after Offline sometimes. All veggies and vegans do it.
Pig used to go out with a "vegetarian" years ago, one night he caught her hiding behind some bins at the section house eating a doner kebab, chilli sauce running down her chin.:p

Oooohhh, if you want a sweet treat that is pretty guilt free try Swedish Glace ice cream, it comes in chocolate flavour too and is to die for

True. I love nothing better than the taste, smell and texture of a fresh kebab burger. As soon as I see one I can't resist getting stuck in,munching away for at least half an hour, or however long it takes.

Useful thread. I'm currently being forced to go vegan, because I've developed a lactose intolerance (apparently this isn't uncommon with coeliacs - your guts are so messed up that they start rejecting other foods too), and have been wondering where I'd get enough iodine and B12, since I loathe all the alternate milks I've tried (and I can't take malt, either - you wouldn't want to be around me when I've eaten malt!)

So I'll be looking up Herbsman's recipes and making sure I have some curly kale available. :)

Mind you, I will still eat eggs, because I see the actual hens that lay the eggs I eat and know they're better treated than most humans. So it seems veganism isn't too difficult as long as it doesn't include laying off eggs. Hmm. :hmm:

I posted a load of vegan recipe blogs one time... Will repost them on this thread next time i'm near a computer.
