Going on holiday - Where not to go

i had a lovely time in malta, some lovely sights, friendly people, beaut weather, lovely little sandy beaches and coves, nice food, whats not to like?

saudi arabia
singapore if you like drugs
pakistan if you like booze

But looking at it, i'd say that saudi is perhaps the only country in the world that has absolutely fuck all going for it.

which makes it convenient that non-muslims aren't alowed to go on holiday there

ah they must have changed the rules

<digs around t'internet>

until february 2004 non-muslims weren't allowed to go. and it looks like jews still can't

indeed.
are you sure about the pre feb 2004 thing? AFAIK you've always been able to go as a non muslim - although not to Mecca.

i wouldn't fancy saudi much anyway to be fair. the only interesting thing about it i can think of is Mecca, so if you can't go there then whats the point?

dubai - though I think a lot of my dislike of dubai is down to the time I was there, hottest part of the year, so couldn't go outside for more than a few minutes at a time. but there seemed so little to do that wasn't based on shopping - ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

Didn't you say something very similar a month ago? Memory on its way out tobes? ;) :p :D

I will probably say something similar in the future. (The landlady of the Blue also runs the B&B next door so one does not need to worry about rain spoiling a holiday).

you could go but only if you had an invitation form a saudi citizen.

ahh that makes sense now.
Back on topic, i dont think i've ever been somewhere i haven't gotten some enjoyment out of.
That said i dont think i'd recommend iran or switzerland to some people.

iran and switzerland are both lovely :)

but as you say, not right for some people

my nomination is for Torquay. It's a shit town full of shit shops

i disagree with Fuerteventura - some of the resorts are pretty bad, but the island is fantastic. we had a lovely hol there last spring. stayed in corralejo which IS quite a yucky purpose built resort type town with lots of irish bars, british bars, etc - BUT rent a car and drive round the island - it's fantastic, hugely contrasting scenery, gorgeous little seaside villages off the beaten track, i'd go back in a shot

Malia in crete would be my idea of a nightmare - but again, crete's a huge island so you cant just write it off

lewes. if you're ever spending a day or two wandering the south downs and your path leads here, find another path.

While India is amazing, and Goa itself is beautiful, I would also include any holiday that involves Calungate Beach. I've seen better beaches in bloody Sussex!

Vegas is the most depressing place on earth, however ripped you are. Just being on the plane going there is enough to make you want to cut your wrists.
Miami- the unfriendliest Latin town you could ever go to.
Barcelona- definitely shite now it's become such a "chic" destination. Was great when you could stay for 80p a night (1980-1983) and eat for the same, and no-one thought it was anything special.
Pacific coast of Ecuador- pigs rooting through their own shit in dusty village streets (apart from the jungly bit up by the Colombian border which is fine).

Barcelona is a wonderful city, doesnt matter if it's "chic" or not. And disliking it because it's prices have caught up with everywhere else is a pointless reason.

Also, for fractionman's benefit, I quite liked Tunisia when I went a couple of years ago. The most annoying bits are the lack of decent public transport, and the stallholders following me asking me to buy their tat.

Cheap as Chips? Tesco? Fuck off!

Agree re: Vegas; a fucking awful place.

Pacific coast of Ecuador has some good towns tho - Montanita is great. (Tho I grant you, a lot of it is pretty unpleasant - poverty tends to do that to a place...).

Zante or Zakinthos in Greece. Except if you are a sixteen year old boy looking to shag a 15 year old slut. If that's the case, you will be in your element.

Missed Montañita and that southern bit, so I'll take your word for it. I'm talking about Jipijapa, Montecristi, Manta, Jaramijó, Bahía Caráquez and all that. It's not just any poverty, though, is it, it's that fucking industrial prawn farming thing that really screws it up.
