God help me, I think I like bluegrass.

I'd second Old Crow Medicine show and Earl Scruggs, also Bill Monroe, Country Gentlemen, the Louvin Brothers, Larry Sparks, Southern Tennant Folk Union, Gillian Welch... all good stuff- some new, some old, some more bluegrass than others.

I fucking love bluegrass.

Another one waiting for when El Jefe's up to posting his bluegrass mix...

I had a whale of a time last night nosing around YouTube looking for weird and wonderful bluegrass stuff!

And I reckon that Smithsonian collections's got to be worth a go - I never even knew there was such a genre as bluegrass gospel!!

Also quite fun is some of the cajun music, but I understand that lots of people are quite reasonably allergic to accordians, so that's not always so popular - but if you can bear it, listen out for some zydeco.

Zydeco f'in rocks, any ideas where I can get hold of some?

I got into bluegrass years ago when I went to Dollywood and picked up a couple of cassettes full of bluegrass music from the surrounding area. I'd also been a fan of Flatt and Scruggs since my teenage flattop days. Good stuff.

Banging Zydeco into YouTube search seems to yield some stuff. I've heard a lot of Beau Soleil that I like, so you could probably start your searches there...

Others...

Buckwheat Zydeco
Clifton Chenier
Beau Jocque

There's a "Rough Guide to Zydeco" CD on Amazon which looks pretty good...

not exactly a shortage on Amazon

Beau Jocque, Rockin' Doopsie, Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco are all big names to look for.
It is, as you say, rockin' music - something of an acquired taste. I quite enjoy hearing it live in small doses but my patienceears thin after about 15 mins. I wouldn't listen to it at home much myself - Knock yourself out Boudreaux!

oh, an it ain't Bluegrass. no sir! it's roots are french where bluegrass is scots/irish.

eta - damn beat to it!

A lot of artists mentioned on here aren't bluegrass, though they're big bluegrass fans and will incorporate elements into it. Emmylou Harris, for example, had some nice takes on it, as did The Byrds.

Start with Flatt and Scruggs (the latter a certified genius) and Bill Monroe, then move onto Jimmy Martin, The Stanley Brothers and Doc Watson.

The best bluegrass is some of the best music there is. I'm learning the banjo, and realising what a hell of a technique Scruggs-style picking is. I'll be learning for ever.

The banjo, though, is a magic instrument.

Bluegrass is also the only genre, for me, in which the fiddle sounds any good.

country music. old style.

Bit misleading that. Most country music traditions are a lot older than bluegrass, which was a pretty modern form when it arrived in the late 30s.

Oooooh.

I have really liked a lot of Bluegrass that I have heard but have not heard loads.

Sojourner...... if you could find your way to being able to copy another compilation album....... *flutters eyelids* :o

"Bluegrass is also the only genre, for me, in which the fiddle sounds any good"

Well if you're saying that and you like bluegrass then you must just never have heard the right proper old-school Irish music then. Cos there really isn't a huge stretch of difference.

But how about klezmer fiddle? or gypsy jazz fiddle?

hey you know Ralph Stanley is playing the Barbican in May?! I didn't even know he was still alive! Must be in his 80s at least by now.

Please could someone recommend me a compilation of good bluegrass music to start with. I'm not interested in a modern take on bluegrass. I don't want bluegrass in dance music form. I'd like some classic stuff.

off ya go:

There are ideological divisions even among traditional bluegrass bands. These divisions center on the longstanding debate about what constitutes "Bluegrass Music". Most traditional bluegrass musicians don't consider progressive bluegrass to truly be "bluegrass", some going so far as to suggest bluegrass must be styled directly after Bill Monroe's bands. However, stylistic divergences in traditional bluegrass generally center around which first generation bands musicians draw inspiration from. Examples include bands who sing in the Stanley Brothers tradition: Roy Lee Centers, Larry Sparks, Sammy Adkins, The Wilson Brothers, The Gillis Brothers and various local bands across the country. Other bands followed Lester Flatt, such as Willis Spears, Curley Seckler and Karl Shifflett.

I'm about half way through an excellent book called In the Country of Country, which has interviews with Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and Earl Scruggs in it.

Ralph Stanley pointedly refuses to call his music bluegrass. For him, it's old-time music, or mountain music, or old-time mountain music.

I think he kind of has a point too. You listen to Stanley Brothers albums, they pay much more attention to the singing and their songs have more of an emotional pull to them. Much as I love Monroe and Flatts & Scruggs, they're all guilty of showing-off a bit.

I too found myself enjoying bluegrass and other forms of country quite recently.
Its very popular down here in Melbourne. On any Sunday in pretty much any pub in the northern suburbs you can find bluegrass bands playing.

Fine, if you're not gonna plug your own band i'll plug it for you, that way you can wash your hands of all responsibility :D

Not strictly bluegrass but the OP will like it, it's got banjos and fiddles

Doom Folk

It's great music, and as a fairly crappy mandolin player, and a rather rusty violin player, I feel like all I'm short of is a pair of dungarees, a straw and some practice.

'some practice'...?

how old are you? unless youre 10 or so if you start right now and live to be 100 you wont learn everything, even half of it.

this thread, (not just you agnes :D...other posts too...) have really made me go 'pffft' and not even care enough now about posting properly about it.

big loss i know but still :p....

the opening post is even sneery. pffft.

What part of the OP is sneery, ffs?

Don't get your knickers in a twist just because someone asked a question about something you feel passionate about and not everyone gave long, informative answers that were to your liking. You could try being informative rather than going "pfffft".

Go and find another thread to post on, then. You're obviously far too good for this one!
