Gmail - actually quite shit

Indeed, but webmail providers are alot more platform agnostic that ISP's, and GMail through POP3 is about as good as "free" (web)mail gets IMHO. But yes, the only real answer is to get your own hosting/email bundle, or filch from someone else.

I meant you can buy a domain name and use email forwarding to send [email protected] to [email protected].

Running your own domain/email gives colossal advantages as well - I have about sixty aliases for my main email account with things like [email protected] so if I get any spam addressed to that address I'll know Amazon must've leaked it somehow :)

You can do that with Gmail, too.

eg. use [email protected] in the situation you describe. You can create unlimited mail aliases on the fly.

Of course that all depends on whether you have the money and the will to maintain your own stuff, which alot of people don't...

I'm going to be transferring all my email addys to my own domain name soon enough - and using Google to host my mail for me. They'll do it for free (apart from the included ads).

That still leaves your "genuine" email address quite easy to deduce though. I imagine spammers already have automated systems to remove the +amazon bit.

True, but as noted earlier, Gmail is very good at filtering out spam.

Wish I could agree with that, but I generally get about four or five land in my inbox a day. I am subscribed to a few medium-volume mailing lists, but if SpamAssassin is capable of spotting pump'n'dump mails and image spam then I don't see why GMail has such a problem with it...

If you indeed are using Ubuntu, you should be able to install it through the add/remove programs thing fairly easily - this is usually by far the easiest way to install and maintain stuff under any Linux distribution, and the Ubuntu one is pretty solid.

Pretty much every UNIX/Linux app stores stuff like this in a hidden folder in your home directory. Hidden folders are simply those with a period/dot in front of them. There's an option in Nautilus (that's the Gnome file manager) to view hidden folders I believe.

I believe you'll find your mail in /home/<your username>/.evolution, which may also be referred to as ~/.evolution (~ being a sort of short-cut to your home folder).

Yup, i am, and i'm used to synaptic package manager now, but there was some glitch i can't remember. It wasn't a case of can't, more don't have time, so i will have another go, it's on my to-do list.
And I'll have another look for my emails tonight too, thanks! [/derail]

i like it lots at the mo.

the only ting i'm puzzling at is how to put the priority! exclamation mark thingy on an email, like you can with outlook express.

it's prbably blatantly obvious :)

I use outlook express for my gmail, they have pop servers. If I need to search my email then I log on to the webmail version, but otherwise I prefer outlook.

Stig, don't let the fact that you're using the Gnome desktop on Ubuntu stop you from installing Kontact/KMail on your linux setup. It might be intended for KDE, but it works perfectly well in Gnome, and is, as stdPikachu says, an amazingly good email client.

When i installed it on my Ubuntu setup, i was very new to linux (and i'm still really a beginner), but it installed perfectly, imported all my Thunderbird settings and emails, and works without a hitch.

I have my own pop3 email account and use Yahoo with its new beta(forever) front end that is a touch slow now there is 10's of thousands of lines of code being downloaded, but with Ad block plus installed I get a totally ad free experience and unlimited storage so it seems.

gmail is easily the best web based email provider.

Have never had any problems relating to speed or unavailability. I've been using it everyday for nearly 3 years.

When you reply to an email it doesn't give you the option to change the subject and sometimes the list of contacts don't show up.

I've been using gmail for ages and never had any problem, and being an early user I secured the account names I wanted. All new accounts are now @googlemail.com.

Sad to admit I use google documents & spreadsheets too. I like the idea should I fail to log in for 9 months it all disappears.

You can edit the subject line by clicking "Edit Subject" in the reply window. I only have to do this in less than 1% of cases. Partly it's hidden because when you change the subject line it breaks the conversation thread.

In the message pane, you can see the full list of contacts by clicking Show Details. Or were you thinking of something else?

I have used Gmail since there was only a couple of thousand people on it and it is by far the best free email provider and has only been down once or twice in three years or more. The problem must be with your ISP or computer.

i've used yahoo mail for about 15 years now and i love it. the new version looks like a proper email client and you can create folders unlike gmail.

Well I just installed Kontact/KMail on your advice, and can't get it to do a single thing.

i can't see where I would import anthing at all from anywhere, can't set it up to recieve any email from anywhere, and can't get it to display any kind of help file, and the 'handbook' cannot be launched.

I'm really really pissed off now, a good way to start the day in a foul mood, find something impossible and waste an hour on it. :(

I'll just add my voice to those urging BA to access his Gmail through POP, using a proper email client (Outlook Express, or preferably Thunderbird) - it's much faster, you can get alerted of a new email without having to open your browser, and you get an archive of your email on your own machine, so you can look stuff up even if the internet goes down. Do it now!

*shrug*
it'll do in a pinch
our office admin was running about 90,000 emails on OE without too much hassle.

Hmm, but I use email at work a lot - how would that work?

Also I've just started using the gmail calendar. WHich is actually kind of useful.

Gave up on the email , who needs email anyway.

Still, I did manage to get the gamecube plugged into my pc monitor, so that's cheered me up.

Haven't got a telly so I haven't had a go on that thing for ages. :D

Sorry to hear that. I certainly understand your frustration; when i first installed Ubuntu there were a few things that had me tearing my hair out, but Kontact installed and ran flawlessly. Not sure if it was just luck, or if there's some step you're missing.

I seem to remember that the whole importing and setting up a mail account thing was pretty straightforward. If you can't see any menus for doing that, i guess it's possible that something went wrong with the installation. As i said earlier, though, i'm still a bit of a Linux noob myself, so i'm not sure how much help i can be. If you have specific questions, i'd be happy to give it a shot, though.
