GLR 20 years ago!

And anyone remember the mid 90s midmorning or early afternoon Saturday show where songs were tenuously linked to each other, with listeners having to guess the reason? I recall it being a two player or two family game. Presenter was a GLR regular with a very recognisable voice, if not name.

Gary Crowley: My father used to listen to him when he was on Capital or something, he seemed to have an ingrained prejudice towards poor Gary, so he did. But I rather liked his show, though too much of it was the whiney kind of indie that gave me a headache. But he was an enthusiastic chap, Gary. One year there was a 'Demo Challenge' competition, based on his regular unsigned slot. Terrorvision won the rock prize, Scarlet (who did actually knock out some nice jingly-jangly tunes) won indie, can't remember the third category, or its winner. Any takers?

Thats right - pretty sure Crowley was on Capital - Capital wasnt all the bad in the 80s. Hes clearly a lovely guy, but the selection seems stuck in a certain 80s pub that I really dont like to drink in.

yeah, the Greenhouse was Chris Evans. It was kind of like a funnier, smarter, more irreverant version of the teen-audience, boyband evening shows that Capital used to do (Neal Fox, Pat Sharp etc).

I also used to really like Sean Hughes' shows.

I could handle Capital in the 80's....little Graham Dene and Nicky Horne and gravelly gary Crowley....but GLR has not been surpassed imo.....I loved the days of Bob Mills and Phil Jupitus....not only was the music always along the lines of 'bloody hell haven't heard that for ages' or something totally new and a complete revelation....but the asides and banter were worth straining your ears for.

I still listen to Robert Elms ( love his show) and Danny Baker....loving Danny's use of Zappa as his inbetween bits instrumental.....wish they had more freedom...

Wasn't the station briefly called London Live, after GLR and before it's current incarnation?

I still listen to Robert Elms and Danny Baker's shows, and although I hate it, I still listen to the breakfast show with Jo Good and Paul Ross (Jo Good must be the thickest person on radio).

But I miss the golden era of Chris Evans on Saturday morning, Chris Morris, and Gideon Coe.

GLR 'music radio for grown-ups' was good - it replaced 'radio london' which was (largely) just another bland, local radio station.

for reasons i never understood, it got turned back into what's pretty much another bland local radio station...

bleurgh.

Robbie Vincent ( Ithink) doing a late night phone in on Radio London is all I remember.....used to listen to that under the bedclothes on school nights.

GLR was awesome. Gideon Coe, Elms, Sean Hughes, Pete Curran... the writing was on the wall when they got Lisa I'Anson in :(

Back when Phill Jupitus was funny too! And Bob Mills' Sunday night show was a perfect end to the week, all he'd talk about was The Simpsons and play They Might Be Giants, always ending the show with an Elvis number.

And the sports guy who used to do '60 songs in an hour' request shows occasionally to fill in, can't remember his name now... Steve something? Think he went to R1.
