Prostitution exists everywhere...It's part of the human condition, as long as its servicing the local needs it's understandable, but when it's been pumped up by foreigners (as in pre Castro Cuba) it's wrong.

And if the USA removed the blockade maybe these women would have a chance of a better life????

Its also illegal in Cuba although its become an increasing social problem since the necessary expansion of the tourism industry.

One of the Cuban Revolution's greatest achievements was the virtual eradication of prostitution in the 1960s by tackling the material conditions that gave rise to like the poverty, corruption and gangstarism that characterised the previous US puppet regime. The brothels and casinos were shut down and free childcare centres, schools and hospitals were built in their place.

The rise of prostitution in Cuba these days is less related to economic need and more the result of the inequities created by tourism and the desire to obtain access to luxuries and services not available to those who have only pesos.
