Glasto 08 Oxfam staff

lol, i tried asking an info point that question once :p
our stewards were always quite helpful on those kind of questions... mind we did tend to have a bit of a drugs amnesty going on on our overnight backstage camping gate night shifts... no searches or anything, just donations to the cause.

was actually a class method of diffusing any potential bother, I've found the phrase 'look mate if you're going to stand here arguing the toss, at least have the decency to sit down and skin up' to defuse any agro from any gate situation... which is a useful skill being as glasto usually hasn't issued us with radios that will actually communicate with any of the security teams in your area, and coms have no idea where you are if you can ever get through to them.

erm not that I'm wanting to put any of the oxfam first timers off, or corrupt you - I'm sure it's all got waaaaay better organised in the 4 years since I was last there *snigger*

LOL, i've stewarded for Oxfam at Glade, and it must've been the top question. Was FOH Glade Stage with a radio, think almost everyone that wasn't asking where the water taps were asked it.

Quality approach, I like it! :)

Had my training on Tuesday.

Been reading Torts FAQ, put me in the mood. In two minds where to camp. The Oxfam crew has been moved outside the fence. While this isn't necessarily an issue, it makes getting to and from the tent harder, so i'm tempted to punter camp, but the access to better facilities including a cheap bar makes it more tempting.

you may want to find out where your shifts are first - if you're on a gate nearish to Oxfam camping then that's handy. But as you know, it's a huge site and you could end up working on the far side of it.

to be fair, at Glasto you're unlikely to find yourself dealing with drugs issues. Glade on the other hand...

i was told there would be no bridge this year.

so i'd be interested to see what you find

wiskers

Bridge non-existence confirmed.

The bridge I was 'seeing' on the Acoustic 3D model is just a little thing linking two internal fields. No bridge to Big Lickle. Apologies for getting any hopes up.

we were always doing the glade / backstage avalon camping which is right next to lost vagueness / lost vagueness areas, so were always getting twatted people trying to jump the gate to cross through the backstage camping to lost vagueness at 3am in that 'but i can hear the music coming from there, why won't you let me just cut through your field' kinda way - plus dealing with the off duty artists and crew who're way worse than the punters.

but yeah, bit different to glade across most of the site;)

*wonder why we always ended up stewarding the areas with all the druggie ravers:hmm:

lol - just remembered the year we did glade stage peak time saturday night some lass hobbles up to the gate having sprained her ankle... railway track absolutely chocker, fuck all way we were getting an ambulance down, so 4 of our lot picked up one of the glades backsage sofas with her on it & carried her over to the ambulance... proper 5 star treatment:)

Acoustic 3D model, that sounds interesting, is it public?

Blimey r0cky you're here too... is there any vaguely Glastonbury related forum you're not on? Worse than me... ;):D

I'll be releasing a new GlastoEarth soon, probably Monday. It'll have various models, including the Acoustic stage. I couldn't include all the extra detail - e.g. trees, caravans etc, because - although wonderfully detailed - it's a CPU killer. But the main stage is there and looking all curvy-pointy-bluey correct. :)

(Not my handywork I hasted to add - that's all from the organiser of Acoustic, who has been really helpful).

Haha! Yes, I'm everywhere! :) Can't be missing out on tidbits of info!

Thanks for the GlastoEarth news, sounds promising!

Was the 3D model of the entire site for sound propagation modelling?

are oxfam really still looking for stewards? i mean, really? it says as much on the website. i dont want to faff about asking people to lend me £165 off their credit card and get all excited about it, fill the form in and then get a thing saying 'did we say we were looking for stewards? oh, sorry, gutted'.

yeah they are. apparently a few students are dropping out because terms are ending on the wednesday or summat.

do glade as well, loads of places open for that :)

Yeah, definitely do Glade, it's an amazing festival and site; also Oxfam take on a much larger role than at Glasto, so you get to do all sorts of interesting things and access all areas, although the site is not exactly large!

It's the layout for Acoustic - for operational reasons mainly, I think. Fences, crew facilities, hard track, that kind of thing.

If a full site model exists, I'm not aware of it. It almost certainly doesn't exist at the level of detail produced by the individual area organisers.

as oxfam only does gates at glasto i'd be surprised if anybody dealt with any drugs at all.

but i enjoy glade for exactly the reason rocky describes, we get multiple roles across site inc arenas so there's more crowd interaction.

Womad is the same but with less drugs and more children.

both are still looking for stewards this year through oxfam.

wiskey

Can be a tad exciting at the main stage (Glade stage) at Glade festival being the person responsible with radio calling medical when someone goes down into a K-hole in the middle of the crowd. Or watching some rapid response security come storming across site to nab some pick-pocketers, really really nice to know that a quick radio call and comms get security down to you fast!

lol i know i ran it last year in the torrential rain with sporadic music and lots of very fucked people dancing to their own tune as it got dark and the power failed.

fantastic fun :D:D:D

the 12 hours before that i'd been on comms co-ordinating.

a long shift but err, very varied shall we say.

Still sounds cool, I put "Acoustic" and "3D" together in my mind and thought of a complete site model for sound propagation! lolz

Those exciting areas at the Glade festival really make the shift pass in no time at all. I felt sorry for less fortunate people stuck on some remote gate. :(

But for me in 2006 I got all the cool jobs! :D :D

Another good reason to steward at Glade, since you get wristbands to let you go anywhere, you don't have to queue at the punters toilets, just nip into backstage areas! :)

yeah i feel that spending 8 hours checking wristbands would kill me slowly and i think everyone in the office knows this now :D

so i do things which interest me more and get me moving about.

other people love standing in one place.

oh dear are we playing top trumps :D

my best ever oxfam job was delivering bits of the sunday paper to the gate crews at leeds last year as the people began to surface in the campsites and the festival woke up with a hangover from hell.

not sure about glade, though. i don't drink or take drugs any more and at glastonbury i'm relying on being able to hide for at least some of the time from the more mental- mental- chicken- oriental side of things. from what i've read about glade, theres like, No Fucking Chance of that!

glade is as much about reading the paper in the sun as it is about drugs
