Glasgow East by-election

You are disqualifed from standing if you are convicted but I don't think any ruling extends to current (or potential) court cases.

Tricia McLeish has been selected as the Solidarity candidate. Sheridan will be appearing in the Radio Scotland Ellis and Clarke comedy show this evening (6.10) as a 'saucy swinger' according to the Scottish edition of the Sun:rolleyes:.

I understand the Scottish Greens are thinking of standing following the inital claim on some blogs that they were not going to contest the by-election because of a lack of support in the area....I don't know if the addition of SSP, Solidarity, and Greens will help or hinder the SNP campaign...

SSP, Solidarity, Greens and...anyone else :) The Socialist Labour Party did very well in next-door Glasgow North East with the absence of the official Labour candidate - convention not standing against the Speaker and all that - anyone got their number? :)

Yep, thats my thinking too

Whilst I know your view on things up here mate there is a rather delicious irony in a CWI member making that remark when it was 2 leading CWIers who came up here to convince TS to split the Left.....

This is truly pathetic....

Bizarre row over school days between Glasgow East hopefuls
Jul 7 2008

A BIZARRE fight has broken out between rival socialist candidates in the Glasgow East by-election. Solidarity claimed their candidate Tricia McLeish was "disciplined" by SSP hopeful and former MSP Frances Curran when they were at school together.
A Solidarity source said: "Tricia went to the same school as the SSP candidate. "Tricia was younger and was a rebellious mod who was often disciplined by the blazer-clad prefect Frances Curran. "Frances clearly showed early signs of collusion with authority. However, maybe the class rebel will win the final victory." Curran said: "I'm not even going to dignify that with a comment." Solidarity are the party set up by Tommy Sheridan after his bitter split from the SSP over his defamation court case in 2006.

Curran said: "I'm not even going to dignify that with a comment." ...

Well said, Frances.

A truly pathetic attempt to justify their position from Solidarity. The should be embarrassed.

McLeish was in the same LPYS, Labour Party, Militant, Militant Labour, SSA and SSP with Frances Curran - and she waits over 20 years to come out with this tosh? Truly a descent into the abyss.

That is comedy gold. :D

And they both went to St Andrews Secondary School?

It's a small world . . . but I wouldn't want to leaflet it.

And to add to the fun of it all, we now have George Galloway backing the Labour candidate Margaret Curran according to his column in yesterdays Record.

Galloway obviously realises that continued support for Sheridan and Solidarity in a crucial by election like this would do him no good at all with his old mates in the scottish labour party. One wonders if he still has ambitions to get back on the damaged scottish labour ship when his time in Bethnal Green comes to an end

Legendary trade unionist and socialist Jimmy Reid 'joins SNP campaign in Glasgow East'.

He is still a useful card to play. I think the SNP have to be sure to try and outflank Labour to the left. If they drift to the right they will never be able to win complete power in Scotland. They need the ex-Labour votes to do so which means 'socialist' policies have to take precedence over what big business demands.

As I understand it Jimmy Reid has always been a nationalist and been in the SNP since 2005. In the 80s became something of a reactionary supporting the witch-hunt on Militant in Labour, and even more astonishingly became a scab defending the bosses during the Miners Strike, most famously he was commissioned by broadcasters for "political balance" to present the reply to a Ken Loach TV documentary supporting the striking miners.

So kinda appropriate that he is in the SNP!

Jimmy Reid has been a member of the SNP for years. No new news here.

On another front life expectancy in Glasgow East is lower than in the Gaza strip - I've checked this out, this is true.

She seems to be a UNISON branch secretary!

Not only that, but seemed to be , when i met her once, a fairly solid trades unionist. Not knowing her politics, I tried to recruit her to the SSP, - as a black, woman, trades unionist I thought "ideal recruitment material"

I was very politely told to go elsewhere.......

Entirely predictable response from Respect Renewal in asking for a Labour vote over a Socialist candidate- they did it in London, they do it now

No BNP candidate, with the reason given being , to quote the BNP Scotland website "this area is one of the strongest socialist wards in the country, even the Tory candidate is a trade unionist and to add to that it is home to Celtic FC and has been said by a local councillor that flying the union flag there would be seen as to be inciting violence!

There would be nothing to gain from standing and would give the left the chance to crow about how they crushed the BNP north of the border"

A remarkably frank admission of defeat by the fash- and perhaps a suggestion for socialists down south how to keep them off the ballot paper.
Better politics.

On another front life expectancy in Glasgow East is lower than in the Gaza strip - I've checked this out, this is true.

There is a famous Guardian report on Calton here - In Iraq, life expectancy is 67. Minutes from Glasgow city centre, it's 54.

If you're really interested in mortality in Glasgow, and its causes, you will find a wealth of information at the website of the Centre for Population Health, ibncluding a detailed community profile, and in the annual report of the Director of Public Health, online - pdf summary here.

Why are things this bad in the East End? Obviously, it's because of the Labour government and the Union, and if people there elect a nationalist councillor to the UK parliament things will get better. Aye right.

Why do people in the East of Glasgow do so badly? The reasons are well enough known and the Director of Public Health's report sets out what is understood and known here, and what is being done.

The main reason is poverty. A crucial factor in this is exclusion from working life. We got news today that the partnership to tackle worklessness, Glasgow Works, has announced a 3670 fall in the number of people claiming Incapacity Benefit, Jobseeker's Allowance and Lone Parent Allowance. The latest figures show 79,530 people in the city were claiming the three benefits last November, down from 83,200 the previous May.

The wise and knowledgeable readers of politics, protest and current affairs are invited to share what they have done to tackle inequalities in life expectancy and how they would have us deal with this most pressing issue.

I'm sure that the editor would prefer there not to be a direct link to a BNP site.

I should hope so.
It is depressing that some of the citizens of this city - usually drunk, violent ones - are sectarian bigots who will turn violent if they see a symbol of a different tribe. I really don't think there's anything admirable about this. There is definitely nothing progressive about it, or even political. It is pure tribalism and it gets people killed.
