I think he's a great singer (well he was, saw him live a couple of years ago and he sounded like Tom Waits on his deathbed). He doesn't put on his singing voice, he just sings.

This. I love Bob Dylan's voice. It's not a classically brilliant voice, but why should it be? He's always in tune. I really like the lower, harsher tones he sings in these days too - the vocals on albums like Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind are wonderful. There's no getting away from the fact his voice has deteriorated lately, though: live, he's not what he was.

This thread gives me another excuse to post from the Rolling Thunder review in the '70s, the concert that was released as Hard Rain. It's IMHO the finest version of this song.

I've just spent the last hour on youtube watching Dylan vids and I've got the Dylan bug all over again.

Pick of the morning. Shooting Star from the MTV unplugged session.

I think he's quite good actually, but I always slag him off to annoy people who go on about how great he is, because they're generally wankers.

:D

A couple of mates and LQ went to see him comparatively recently. Apparently the most unpleasant crowd they've ever witnessed, full of supercilious wankers who insisted on stubbornly occupying the exact same spot for the whole gig.

Modern Times, good yes. But not up to the groundbreaking standard of his first few. And I look forward to his next to see what happens next .....

he's a pensioner! Who ever made groundbreaking albums for nigh on 50 years?

I give him zero. He is one of the worst most irritating - - - - -. Where is my zero option?
