I think he's a great singer (well he was, saw him live a couple of years ago and he sounded like Tom Waits on his deathbed). He doesn't put on his singing voice, he just sings.

This. I love Bob Dylan's voice. It's not a classically brilliant voice, but why should it be? He's always in tune. I really like the lower, harsher tones he sings in these days too - the vocals on albums like Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind are wonderful. There's no getting away from the fact his voice has deteriorated lately, though: live, he's not what he was.

This thread gives me another excuse to post from the Rolling Thunder review in the '70s, the concert that was released as Hard Rain. It's IMHO the finest version of this song.
