I agree with that. I do like a lot of Bob Dylan's 'protest' songs - for instance, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll is devastating - but I prefer his more abstract lyrics.

As a straight-out protest singer, I think Phil Ochs was better. :)

blood on the tracks is one of the greatest albums ever written. so 9 , just for that.

9 - recent years have taken the shine off a bit. But they don't really diminish his previous contribution to music.

really? His last two albums have been superb, and early noise about the new one indicates that it is well up there too.

10/10 from me

Yes, I'm looking forward to hearing the next one. Modern Times I can take or leave, but Love and Theft was an excellent record and as for Time Out Of Mind, I think I concur with those who said it might just be the best album he's ever made.

blood on the tracks and time out of mind are two of my most loved albums of all time.
i haven't bought any of his more recent albums but they are on the list. it's a very long list.

eh?

When it came out, David Bowie was quoted as saying 'I think it might be the best thing he's ever done.' That's who I had in mind, and I'm inclined to agree with him. It's an incredible record.

Bowie also apparently covered Trying To Get To Heaven, but it was never released. I'd love to hear it...

Personally I think the words of "No more auction block" are devastating; whereas the words of "Blowin in the wind" are among Dylan's worst. It's a protest song without any referents; a string of bad koans; meaningless puffs of rhetoric that are quasi-Old Testament, quasi-Hallmark greetings card.

I agree re the lyrics to No More Auction Block but I was specifically talking about the tune in that example. I love spirituals generally but that one is a bit boring tunewise. Blowin in the Wind puts a bit of oomph into the tune.

Lyrically, it's not his best, I'll give you that but it was one of the first songs he ever wrote. There's nothing wrong with meaningless puffs of rhetoric that are quasi-old testament. If you block out the fact that we know the song so well now and consider it in the context of the time - that one song is still better than many other folkies entire musical output.

There are, conversely, some great Dylan songs without referents that sound like protest songs. A subtle but significant difference. I think Dylan's at his best when he's in surrealist diss mode (songs like It's all over now Baby Blue) or surrealist hipster mode (songs like Highway 61 or Maggie's Farm or Bob Dylan's Dream)

Not sure about that. I think he's often at his best when he's singing about real events from his life. I often wonder whether the guys sitting around in this room realise that they're present as Dylan just casually knocks out one of the greatest love songs ever written.
Upthread it was discussed when was he at his coolest. How about when he's silmultaneously inventing the music video and rap music and doing it all to a great song.

i feel that way about his song "subterranean homesick blues"

it dont get much better.

That was the first Dylan song I ever heard cos I borrowed "Bringing it all back home" from my local record library when I was a nipper. It certainly had an impact, but "Blonde on blonde" absolutely blew me away. Well, mostly "Visions of Johanna," which is my favourite one of his songs.

Modern Times, good yes. But not up to the groundbreaking standard of his first few. And I look forward to his next to see what happens next .....

for the record - i have a problem with bob dylan, in that i can't stand his voice, and everyone i know thinks he's almost god.

so for content - i'd probably give him an 8

for killing my ears - also an 8 - he does it so well

Thing is, think of all his songs that have been done better by other people: -

PJ Harvey -- Highway 61
Jimi Hendrix -- All along the watchtower
Johnny Cash -- Wanted man
Nick Cave -- Wanted man
Peter Bellamy -- Death is not the end (rescuing a shite "Christian period" song, there)

Love him love him love him love him love him

Simply the greatest performer of the 20th century. The man is an unrivaled genius. I love every line of every track of every one of the 65 (ish) albums he's ever made. Acoustic. electric. protest. mystic, christian, bitter cynical ballads, painful nostalgic blues, bittersweet love songs, biting venom filled attacks, live performances. Studio albums.
Early 60s stuff, the radical grinding electric of the 70s distorted feedback ridden live performances like budokan. Solo acoustic sessions and live performances with the Band. Every thing he touches is pure gold. I could live without all the music in the world as long as i had Bob

How can anyone not be bowled over by lines like

"I hope that you die"
and that your death will come soon!
And i'll follow your casket, on a pale afternoon
And i'll watch while you're lowered, into your death bed
Ahd I'll stand over your grave till i'm sure that your dead!
LONG LIVE BOB

I gave him a 9 for the originality, quality of lyrics, and his whining voice that makes you either love or hate him.

This is the first Dylan song I really listened to and it's still my favourite

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

I think he's quite good actually, but I always slag him off to annoy people who go on about how great he is, because they're generally wankers.

I think he's a great singer (well he was, saw him live a couple of years ago and he sounded like Tom Waits on his deathbed). He doesn't put on his singing voice, he just sings. Because he's a folk singer and that's what they do.

+ Adele-- Make you feel my love.
