Girls that kick arse with music

I would see this thread as more of a celebration of the women who have been helping breaking down the walls in the industry (um...with the exception of Prussian Blue!). They are not accepted in the same way as men are always accepted (it is still a male-dominated industry it seesm) , but hey, vive la difference! You don't get many all female Coldplay type bands, so perhaps the lack of acception breeds greater creativity and bravery in the music.

Shakira, Shakira....

Her hips don't lie.

Good Point, Well Made. I like that - am gonna start quoting it.
Well you have to have some pluses when looking at the shockingly sexist state of affairs in the music bizz (as scifisam also mentions).

Sadly, you do get female Coldplay type bands.

This thread is a celebration, of course - but, like I said, it's a shame it has to exist at all.

I really like Bjork, Beth Gibbons, Bat For Lashes, Aretha Franklin, and Lisa Hannigan.

Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Beth Ditto, Karen O = No thanks.

I agree with your points made earlier about how depressing it is that in the wider world female musicians are still cursed with a feeling of novelty, but with regard to this thread, I just see it as a good excuse to post up a load of cool musicians and celebrate your favourites, rather than any attempt to redress an imbalance. There's loads of people on here I've never heard of who I will be checking out, so hopefully I'll get some cool new music out of it! :)

Thinking about it, I suppose the imbalance that this thread does explicitly address is the notion that female music = nice safe twee girly sound in a pretty package, which is also depressingly common.

Yep - I've just been in far too serious a modod lately - am trying to lighten up a bit!

Some of the artists on here are fucking awesome.

I also loved Suzi Quatro when I was tiny - she always looked like she was having so much fun.

Unless you're from North Carolina (the greatest indie rock state in the union) or Germany (where her label is based) you probably won't have heard of her.
I got handed an album on Sunday night (produced by J Mascis no less) and it's blown me away. Kind of acoustic punk rock PJ Harvey for want of a better description at this time of night. Came out in 2005...can't believe I missed something this good.

any mention of patti smith yet?

she rocks. hard. much as i love pj harvey (who also rocks hard), much of her output is simply patti with a devon accent (or is it somerset? i can't remember)

Hmmm. I saw Patti Smith at Primavera last year and she was utter, utter shit. Wanky clarinet world-jazz and tired old pub rock.

How about The Distillers Girl(who does look superhot in this photo)

Glad no ones said Julliette Lewis, who loses points for rehashing the Hives sound and trying too hard

Ooooh yes, Brody Dalle - she is so definitely kick ass!

She and Josh Homme are easily the coolest couple around:cool::cool:

It would be good if people can say who their nominations are, as well as putting up photos. Nosy people like me want to know these things!
