Gin and tonic

Mmmm.... lovely in summer. At the moment there's a strange bottle of gin in the cupboard which we brought back from Minorca - can't remember what it is called, think it begins with X (?); God knows what it's going to be like!
Xoriguer. They sell it in Waitrose, if you develop a taste for it. :)

I like Hendricks or Tanqueray if I'm feeling fussy, but any will do :D

Tanqueray if I'm feeling fussy, but BS or Gordon's is fine as long as it's mixed properly, chilled etc.

Nowt worse that a pub G'n'T that's warm, has almost melted ice and a sliver of lime that looks like it's been under a UV lamp for 2 days...

Indeed. I really get fucked off when some fucker gives a G&T with 1 maybe 2 small ice cubes that have melted by the time i get bacl to my seat.

Amazing how a well-made G&T is one of the finest drinks available, but a warm G&T is one of the most unpleasant. Last summer at my local they had some new bar staff who would always ask if you wanted ice and lemon in your G&T. No, I'll have it warm, unlemony and disgusting thanks  I don't ask much from bar staff, but a G&T without ice and lemon (or lime)? That's just wrong.

If I can't have a nice pint of real ale (or if I've already had too many) a nice G&T goes down just the ticket

Double gin, a sploosh of tonic (not swamped with a whole bottle) and a slice of lime. YUM!! :)

Yes!

But not the god awful bog standard Gordon's please. I'm a big fan of Plymouth (40%) Gin, or of course Bombay Sapphire.

Bombay Sapphire is wonderful, I never thought I'd like gine before having a couple of shots. but I'd have it on its own, no tonic for me.

Love 'em as long as everything is super cold. No bigger dissapointment than being served one that's made with flat, luke warm tonic that's melted all 2 of the ice cubes - a typical british pub one in other words :D

On the depressing thing - I've a good friend who drinks nothing but them and, quite a lot of them too.
He can be a real miserable bastard. Goes into hibernation for weeks on end sometimes.

i did wonder about the G&T maudlin element - i'd always been sure i'd experienced it myself, but simultaneously found it implausible that different spirits would affect your moods in different ways. I put it down to some kind of Pavlovian response. But the quinine thing would make sense..
I find the "drunk" I get with wiskey is totally different to the "drunk" I get with beer, I'm convinced not all alcohol is created equal :D

although I prefer Gin and Grapefruit Juice
Sometimes called a Bulldog though you'll get it in a salted glass if you'd ordered it that way from me.

I really do like Gin Highballs, Pink Gin, G&T and the Tom Collins being the principals of that art.

I believe that the Bulldog is called the Bulldog as a name check on the much more well known Greyhound. Quite apart from being a Vodka & Grapefruit drink Greyhound is also slang for a very short skirt from the fact that a greyhound (on a race track) is close to the hare (hair). A subtlety I find perverse in a quite British way.

I totally agree no ice is like sex without an orgasm

Gin = yeuch! My taste buds do not compute. If it were the last alcoholic drink on the planet I'd be teetotal. Yeuch!!!!!!!!!!

I love G&T... again more in summer than winter tbh.... but apart from the fact that it tastes so good, it's also a very light (calorific) drink if you have it with slimline tonic.... PLUS, I find that I drink it much more slowly than red wine, which tends to just tip itself down my throat like a colony of lemmings in a rush... :(

Another vote for Gordons Export :)

Has to be ordinary Schweppes - slimline is the devil's invention

I think they should make G&T ice lollies :D

<hopes no-one from the No Booze thread is watching>

Bombay Sapphire and tonic with lime (although lemon will work in a pinch) is a summer favorite here too.

It's manageable on the diet tonic, but not nearly as good, unfortunately.

I have the same relationship with tequila. I can put up with anything else (even whisky which I'm no great fan of) if it's the difference between drunkeness and sobriety but tequila? Foul stuff! Diesel oil is palatable by comparison.

I love a good ice cold G & T (Bombay Sapphire being my choice).

I don't find gin depresses me but I find the pissed-ness :D from gin very different from that with beer or wine, kind of more euphoric, like a drug.

Which might be why I switched to dark rum: the intoxication it brings is more heathenish than it is with gin.
