getting your own photography site up

hey there techy urbanites :)

im a photography student and the time has come where I think i really need to get a website up.i just wanted to ask what you lot think is the quickest and best way to do this..obviously presentation is important because it's a photography thing.im a total website making novice,so be gentle with me.. ;)

the other thing i wanted to ask is practically how easy/fast is it to update a website? because i know a fair few sites that don't update for ages..is it a case of they just can't be fucked or is it a long process of uploading and stuff?

cheers my dears

huh? what's zenfolio?

oh and preferably cheapish suggestions would be great..

thanks again

The cheap and cheerful photoblog route can be customised to have a more interactive gallery feel too.

I use pixelpost - straight up normal photoblog type thing.

As for updating - it can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. If you use a pre-packaged off-the-peg solution it'll be as easy as uploading a new photo and adding the title, if that's all you want to do.

thanks for the ideas so far.the blog route sounds appealing..I don't know why I didn't think of that :)

and with regards to like domain names how does all that stuff work? because ideally i'd like to be able to set up a site where it's like whateverphotography.co.uk or something like that.how would i go about doing that?

Go to a hosting company like these chaps and buy your domain / hosting service there:

http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/

Careful when checking which domain names are taken. I once checked a name using a URL checker that one of these domain sellers offered (not fasthosts btw). I went back to buy it next day and it had been bought and was for sale for $500. I suspect they scanned the names people were checking and bought the good ones to resell!

Or you could use Gallery:

http://gallery.menalto.com/

Which has the advantage of being free, but the disadvantage that you have to do a bit of tech stuff yourself to set up and it's a bit clunky (IMO).

It's what we use for the photo comp here:

http://www.extracrispy.co.uk/gallery2/v/u75photocomp/

Thats is nice and easy pm me if desire something like this and it goes on what about drag n drop this means you take your images drop them into a directory upload it and it should work i could write you a simple drag n drop page..

www.fasthosts.co.uk are shit i host with them and if i could get out of the contract i would ive had nothing but hassle with them from day one..

I use fasthosts to buy a couple of urls and they were fine.

I use clook - http://www.clook.co.uk/ - for my website and they've been great. No problems.

Never come across them ill have a look, buying a url from fasthosts no problem but last year one hassle following another to much downtime one reason for going to flickr i need a good host and fasthosts are not this i would say stay away from them to be honest ive had nowt but hassles and last time i rang them i was 180 in there phone line with over a three hour time wait till i spoke with a human..
