Getting Sofas down 4 flights of stairs for bulk refuse collection

I find people will adopt the cheapest option. If it suits them to accept Tesco's 'advice' they will, thus if Tesco said 'please tip our drivers' people would generally say 'I'm not doing what Tesco want!' but, because it's the other way around, they're happy to comply. Human nature, etc.

Good advice. If you can't get it out of a window drag it on to the balcony and let it go.

We dropped last one through stairwell and letters went round shortly thereafter telling people not to do it.

Can you imagine if there was a little old lady on the ground floor, she'd probably have a heart attack?

How long ago was that?
That's why you have someone at ground level with the stronger one holding the rope on top. System worked with me at the bottom though it was only one storey though the furniture and stainless steel goods (commercial versions of white goods) involved were ffff-ing heavy.

I had the exact same problem last week. We had a monster huge settee bed that had seen better days, and wanted to get it down two flights of stairs in a very tight area. It took almost a morning getting it up there in the first place, and so we weren't thrilled with the prospect of getting it down.

The lovely British Heart Foundation on Old Kent Road kindly offered to send a couple of guys round to take it off our hands (and also down the stairs...)

When DFS delivered the new settee, the blokes just laughed at the idea of taking the old one down. My fear was that the BHF would send round a couple of elderly charity workers, who would struggle, and we'd be taking the piss.

I put in a polite call to BHF, who were very understanding.

Anyway - the solution - a simple saw and half an hour later the settee was in pieces. Lambeth Council then took it away, as agreed. I was amazed how simple it was to cut it up - 'top quality' settee as well

Unless the old settees really are worth saving, I'd go for the cut 'em up approach.

Maybe 15 years ago.

We could turn this into a fun urban day out with ropes and pulleys and things.

Or lots of urbanites walking up Brixton Hill with chainsaws :D

So even though the sofa was "dead", they were still willing to come round and hack it up and get it down the stairs for you?

Sorry, nope. They were happy to come round and take it away in one piece, even though I explained it was HUGE and had seen better days.

Unless you can find a friendly home with someone who is prepared to do all the transportation, I think the chopping up option is the best.

My offer still stands but it it seems I now get to smash shit up:D
As quimmy says, this has the makings of a fun day out. Whose volunteering to do the run up to Paulo'z?

:D

I'll get himself to do the "run" but you might wait a while if he forgets what he's up there for ;)

Incidentally, I think Paulo'z may have sold their bar stools to Bazaar Bazaar near Blenheim. I saw identical stools out there yesterday :D

Well I booked two handpersons from Age Concern to remove 1 sofa, two televisions and an exercise bike. They were so knackered after removing the sofa, they've asked us to ring office and book another date for the rest of it.

Said it's the heaviest sofa they've had to handle :o
