Getting Sofas down 4 flights of stairs for bulk refuse collection

sorry if it's too obvious, but when you phoned the council did you tell them your bf is disabled? most councils collect from inside in those cases.

Yes, I said he was disabled, living on the 4th floor with no lift. He said they can only collect from outside.

I'm not sure I believe that. What about little old ladies? Do they expect them to carry it down four flights themselves?

Ring them up again. I often find talking to someone different on the same telephone number gets me a different answer.

He got onto Lambeth Streetcare and they confirmed they won't do it.

Has suggested ringing Age Concern or Local Area Housing Office.

I'm going for breakfast instead

How about asking that furniture place behind the car wash on Brixton Hill? They sell second hand furniture don't they? They could come and collect as it's local.

Yes, second-hand places have been suggested, but like I said, I'm not sure anyone would want them. They're very, very knackered :D

Actually, the middle seat in the 3 seater is ok, if someone wanted a 3 seater with one seat that doesn't sink :D

I saw this on the local news a couple of months ago - IIRC, they do only collect from outside.

You can't throw it off a balcony (with someone sensibly placed below)? If not, tell Tesco man there's a tenner in it for him.

If you're stuck for a man-handler, please PM - happy to help.

I'm around tomorrow. I owe you up to an hour's work.:)

Lovely offer Twisted but don't know when he's getting new ones yet. They said probably 2-3 weeks. I'm just having to plan ahead. I'm currently transferring a book cabinet to the other side of the room so we can benefit from the other radiator that was blocking it. We've had to prop it up with books as it's wonky due to now sitting where the old fireplace is. Hope it doesn't topple over as Video and DVD players are now on top of it. :hmm:

Being unemployed's great fun :D

Cushions are fixed

Our friend chucked the last one down the stairwell.

Shortly thereafter, notices were put up asking people not to drop things down the stairwell. We didn't know he was going to do that.:D Obviously the noise of it crashing to the ground didn't bother him as he was deaf and dumb

Not sure of the disabilty aware language here. Haven't heard the term 'deaf and dumb' for some decades now!!!

Yes, well ok, he is deaf. He's not dumb, but doesn't speak much. Unfortunately, his name was Deaf and Dumb ?????. That was over 20 years ago though. :o

I suppose the Deaf population as well as the world in general was not that pc then. To be honest I work in the health and care field and have heard some professionals still still using this term (at times). I was being a bit challenging but do find it a terrible term. As ever it is different if the person themself uses the words, but unsure what this is portraying to others.

It was his brothers and sisters that told me he was deaf and dumb all those years ago (talking 1985 when I met him) and he was commonly known in the pub as Deaf and Dumb ????? so it just kind of stuck out of habit I suppose.

Considering what a hard bastard he was, nobody dared cross him, so I doubt very much he minded at the time otherwise he'd have decked people left, right and centre. Obviously now, all these years later, he might though :D

Well, I'm generally around afternoons and evenings so give me 24 hours notice.

Is there a big stairwell, large enough to hoist it down on a rope? I;ve got the ropes if there is, otherwise it's lifting!

There is, but it's still heavy and then we'd have to hassle all the neighbours to remove their bikes which are down there. :D There's even a hook in the wall. Considering his estate is 100 years old, there must have been some kind of pulley system at some stage considering how heavy furniture used to be

Well, they'll have to move their bikes for a day then.:D

Same really. Well apart from the afternoons bit that is, but drop me a line if you need an extra pair of hands in the evening.

I'm quite good at knocking over bikes too.

Thanks for offer, especially about knocking bikes over ;)

Are you supposed to tip Tesco delivery persons???

No, but considering they have to carry shopping up four flights of stairs, I do, even though I go down and help them.
