Getting Run Over in Brixton

i'd characterise the following as nimby or partially nimby threads:

Getting Run Over in Brixton
Ritzy's "crack" door
Brighton Terrace Drug Treatment centre
A rant about Brixton Tube (or why PPP keeps me awake at night)
Police in Lambeth Warn the Public about Escapee
Crack Squirrel photographed!
Nicking donations left outside charity shops

with this one taking the biscuit for highly offensive and disrespectful treatment of sincere believers:

Cross wielding Christians in Brixton

mind you editor, i'm sure i don't need to remind you that it's your site so my humble opinions count for shit, please don't ban me :) ramadhan karim!

well - dunno 'bout the other ones, but I will NEVER feel bad about ridiculing xtians. It's an essential part of free speech, and they deserve it for all the harm & suffering their superstition has caused

I would agree that things seem more negative these days - there does seem to have been more than the usual reports of muggings and bad news - but that's just my impression. I don't know if that's because things have actually got worse or not or just because more bad things are being reported than good.

Intostella's story about the guys who chased after her bag snatchers in Brockwell Park sticks in my mind. I was really upset that it had happened at all, but heartened that she got her bag back and her helpers chased the snatchers. (I think that's right isn't it?)

So do people think things actually are going downhill in Brixton, getting better or the same as always?

I did find the crack squirrel thing quite funny though... just to lighten things up a bit...

Have you actually read those threads? What percentage of the posts do you think are from NIMBYs?

I really, really hope that you're joking here.

Not my intention to be HB's messaging service but in the circumstances I can see why he is anxious not to be misrepresented.

It did seem to me unlikely that HB saw what happened given where he lives, so point taken IS, and apologies HB.

And point taken Sulfilala, I should have mentioned you in my original post, and if we meet again, the drinks are on me.

You were a blessedly friendly face at a desperate moment.

Aw! You and hatboy sound made for each other!

But here's a suggestion for you: if you don't like the topics currently under debate, there's nothing stopping you starting your own threads - heck, you can even post up about 'edgy' 'street' issues too, if you like!

What on earth could possibly be nimby about crack squirrels? They're not in anybody's back yard.

Well, it's NIMBY in the sense that I don't want those squirrels in my back garden, digging up my carefully concealed crack stores...

;)

I'd agree with Sufiala to a certain extent; there seem to be a fair few 'concerned resident' style threads at the moment - I'd certainly not agree with some of the assumptions or views voiced by some of the posters .... which is precisely why I (amongst others) have said as much on the threads.

That said, I find the assumption that someone can bring misfortune on themselves simply because they work in the wrong field more than slightly distasteful - in this case poor old Hendo was hit by a speeding car travelling the wrong way.... and some folks were all too quick to get on their hobby horse to imply that he 'brought it on himself' somehow. I've always loved the inclusive nature of Brixton life, but it's difficult to avoid the conclusion that some people are nearly as judgemental, close minded and prejudiced as the folks they would claim to despise.

I don't know, I think the spate of recent crack threads are representative of genuine concern about a surge of criminal activity around Rushcroft Rd. I certainly wouldn't call any of the people posting on them NIMBYs. There are some positive things to come out of those threads as well -- namely the mybrixton project which is an attempt for the community to find some solutions to the frankly, nasty goings-on around Rushcroft/Electric Lane at the moment.

With regards to hendo, he doesn't live in a media bubble you know. I get the impression that hatboy thinks he's the only one who has a genuine interest in this community. That simply isn't true. Hendo will talk to anybody, and often does. The other week he was chatting to a Coldharbour Lane drug dealer (self-identified) about his mugging. The drug dealer was very disapproving, and is now, apparently "looking out" for hendo, along with his drug-dealer mates.

What Tarranau said. I'm amazed that the focus of this thread seems to be focusing on whether or not Hendo wears a suit and whether or not that makes him "Brixton" enough, rather than the twat in the Beemer or the bigoted old bint on the pushbike. But that's the Brixton forum for you...
