getting rid of ants humanely?

is not wanting to kill ants not taking being a hippy a bit too far???

i think there is a special type of petrol you can get to pour down antholes which just wounds them and is really good for the environment

my grandma puts down vinegar at the point they are appearing from / crossing. apparently they dont like the smell/taste of it. it seems to work, but it depends if you can put up with the smell of vinegar

thanks again all, wil go and have a proper look in a min

johnny take that pic off please, not funny

I had some recently and vacuumed them up. They survived the experience and I released them at the end of the garden. They seemed to regroup after a day of vacuuming here and there and now seem quite happy to carry on living in the garden instead (by the compost).

I don't like killing them either.

the thing about ants in the vegetable plot is that they farm aphids and milk them, deep digging is a good way of getting rid of their nests

Shmu is waging vicious war on ants at present, when I saw the thread title on the main page I thought she'd had a turn of conscience. :D

We decided boiling water is probably more of an instant kill than powders or liquids, and generally kinder to the environment.

Me and the boys had hours of fun watching the critters when I lifted a large paving slab a few weeks back, the network of tunnels underneath was amazing and they all went potty trying to grab all the eggs and move them somewhere safe before they cooked in the sun.
Borax does for them. Google "borax ants". Allegedly.

have been told paprika now by my dad who has them as well, and they're coming from near the kettle there too
