Getting Caught for Downloading dodgy stuff???

Some women has been fined £16,000 for file sharing.

This cannot be a surprise, that things have gone this far.

However, for many internet users it must have been a shock to the system when a British woman was fined £16,000 for sharing a pinball game.

But whatever anyone’s views on this matter are, it would seem that she is not likely to be the only one, in fact the London based law firm, Davenport Lyons, have confirmed that they are actively seeking the same result from around a hundred more cases.

This case is based on the Dream Pinball 3D, which is owned by Topware Interactive.

The woman is believed to have obtained a copy of the game and then made it available to be shared through peer-to-peer networks, which allow users to share files without any fees being paid the copyright owners.

File sharing is becoming a big issue these days, with government, ISPs and copyright owners getting together to see how they can stop this from happening, which will leave then with their work cut out as it is estimated that around six million people every year share files in some manner.

I got caught and my service suspended for uTorrenting a few weeks back.

Oh all of the things to get caught for it was The Happening which is the biggest pile of shite ever to waste film stock.

I was using Peer Guardian at the time so that was a lot of fucking use.

I'm keeping my head down for a while and next time I get asked the trick question 'Are you using a wireless router?' the answer will be yes.

I'm interested in Rapidshare but I've always imagined the range of content to be nothing like what you find with torrents. Newsgroups interest me - being that it's usually there that the scene releases you'll find torrents of originate from - but despite having read a few guides they still confuse me.

I download but don't share - isn't that a way to avoid getting in trouble?

Yes, but morally a bit shit....you wouldn't be able to download fuck all yourself, if someone else (well, lots of other people) wasn't taking the risk themself!

And not only ought you to share, but you should share up to a decent ratio too.

That's all if you're using a free service, mind you.
I don't know anything about the alternatives mentioned here, but I imagine that given that you're paying, the risk is in some way limited - so different rules apply.

I share when I'm not downloading, but pause everything while I'm getting something

A newsreader and a usenet account is all you need. I use Newsleecher for the reader and Giganews for the account.

I feel that way about IRC though, it just baffles me.

I've never not found something on rapidshare. There are so many forums with links that you'll stumble across something eventually.

I felt with usenet I was actually paying for the nzb files/subscription to newzbin which seemed to defeat the point a little. As well as these days a sub to a binary news server.

How safe are we using Rapidshare etc

I have to be honest and say that since I got wind of this I've stopped downloading/uploading altogether (some might say that was their aim!)

I never have used either P2P or torrents but used to use Rapidshare,Megaupload,Depositfiles and Megaerotic alot but have stopped for now as it really worried me.

How safe are these in comparison to P2P/Torrents?

There are decent free NZB sites such as Merlin's Portal, but tbh with the right usenet prog you don't really need NZBs. Altbinz is brilliant - you can search and browse newsgroups with ease, and filter results based on filesizes etc which really cuts out the crap. There is a free version of Altbinz, which is getting a bit long in the the tooth now, so it is worth spending a few quid to have access to the latest version and future updates from the developer. (it's only a one off payment though, I think)

Check here and here BMD, 192 is the min these days with 256 being normal.

Another good site is highqualitymp3.com

I think the torrenting risk can really be minimised.
I use secure invite-only sites like waffles.fm and karagarga for music and films, respectively.
I use encrypted torrents and https connections
I use peer guardian.

I think that this brings the risk probably as low as it can be without taking the massive speed cut inherant to running it all over TOR

All those sentences strted with 'I'. What a narcissist
